In my humble opinion while your doing the engine it's well worthwhile strengthening a few known weak points, such as the head studs, headgasket and oil pickup. Pistons are also fairly weak so if you plan on making big power (220+) forged pistons as well.

If you do the studs, headgasket and oil pickup it'd probably be around an extra $1k on top of the $6.5k quote for new EJ257.

The main reason I'm in favour of that built engine is that its cheap when you consider the parts used, especially if its confirmed to be running well and guaranteed by your mechanic. It should also be much stronger than a stock EJ257 and safely support much more power

Yeah, it was previously running around 20psi happily... will have to get a more accurate quote including labour and details of guarantee...

Sounds like a grumbling sound deep within the engine when I rev it or hold the revs at around 2500-3000rpm. It's not 'fatal' yet so I can persist with it for a while.

I have the opportunity to be a pre-built engine from my mechanic, which will be pulled apart and re-assembled to ensure it is all running fine. Specs are:

MY06 WRX engine (assume this is just an EJ255?)
Bottom end rebuild was: Manley Rods, Mahle pistons, ACL race bearings, Cosworth oil pump
Head rebuild was Cosworth valve springs, Overhauled heads, Cosworth Head gaskets, ARP Headstuds, ARP Case bolts.

I'd need to use my existing intake manifold, and possibly replace the injectors as the ones used are bigger and probably won't fit under the intake manifold. Or maybe de-cap the stock 550's.

I should be able to get this for $4k (plus labor)

Thoughts? I'm guessing this is cheaper than building something from the ground up...

Sorry to hear this. What you mean phantom knock ? Signs ? Can you describe to help us or me understand what is the things to look out for and notice.

Cheers

The ECU picks up the noise as knock, so pulls timing. Eventually it starts affecting the learned timing values and on a few occasions the IAM drops. Here's a bit of history: viewtopic.php?f=56&t=30147

The big end noise isn't audible yet without the knock ears or a stethoscope... so maybe with some thicker oil I can buy myself a bit more time....

Nov 2007. Chassis number I assume is the last 6 digits of the VIN. Mine is lower than 068148, so don't think it's part of the recall thing...

I was following Jackson's rebuild thoughts on Facebook but had no idea the list had grown.
I was just told on the weekend that my head gaskets are gone.. so engine out for me too. Still unsure which way I'll go.

MSR said he's doing up to 3 builds a week due to big ends and head gaskets.
He also said the rings in them go at only 140,000 kms...

Is there a way to diagnose a big end, other than the sound? (mine is so quiet it's only being picked up as knock... but Kido things it's unlikely as it's been happening for so long, it would have let go by now).

don't know if my heads lifted yet.. will know for sure when the engines out. All we know for now is that boost is getting into the cooling system and my overflow is filling up to the top.

mine is minor for now. Michael reckons I can keep driving it for another 100,000kms as long as i keep getting the air out of the cooling system.

I don't know about big ends I'm sorry, but I would have thought it had gone by now too... seems to hit people without notice normally.

:(

So many engine dramas...

How much does it usually cost for a head gasket repair?

Allow for around the $3000 mark as you would be crazy not to upgrade the head studs while your there. And then if there's head damage (unlikely) there's around $400 each for rebuilt heads. It starts to snowball because you see the opportunity to do things you wouldn't normally be interested in doing.
