Kinugawa turbo on post f/l gen 4

Postby Dutch54 » Tue Apr 07, 2015 4:06 pm

Hi all

Yes this is another turbo advice post so I apologise but I couldn't find what I was looking for on the forum or on the web

I have a face lift GT, and am looking at getting a kinugawa turbo. I have a basic understanding on the various options available but want to know from anyone who has one, or knows about them which is better suited to 2.5T lib engines? Ie: would a Td05 18g 8cm be more suited than a td05 20g 7cm, Or is 16g more suited ect. Ill prob get the billet version and sts 9 blade (vs 12) unless someone advises otherwise? And is a larger boost actuator over 1bar needed?

I'd consider other turbos ie vf52 but these kinugawa ones are in my $1000 price range and seem to get good reviews all round.

Current mods are phat dump/hks cat back, AVO top mount i/c, 3 port boost solenoid, hks panel filter, silicone intake, Insight tune to 168kw atw.

I'm not after a specific power figure but would like something in 200-220kw range, mainly so that the power difference will be obvious over what I currently have. The VF46 drops off too early which was noticeable when I did a track day. I'm aware I'm gonna get more lag but want to keep this to a minimum over the vf46.

I'll also get new fuel pump and injectors to support the mods.

This forum has been real helpful with the mods so far and any other mechanical issues I've had, so any advice on this topic would be much appreciated.

Thanks again

I recommend having a good look at this thread for advice. Perhaps speaking directly with some of the guru's who post on that thread about what yo are looking for.

200kw on the vf46 is awesome! I had stock turbo with fmic, turbo back exhaust, intake, id1000's, fuel pump and e85. 210kw with 20psi at 2400rpm, lots of smiles!

Hi Shav

Thanks for reply. Yeah I had a good read of that post, some great info on other turbo variants. I had looked at the 440xt but are a bit out of my price range. Cheapest I could find were $1700 Aus. If I had to spend that amount I wouldn't be looking into it at all. Also the power gains were more than I was after for engine safety reasons. The info im really after is the differences between the Kinugawa variants and how it relates to drivability of the lib. I'e: is the 18g 7cm the best for reasons a, b and c ect

Hi Chubbs

Thanks aswell. Those power gains on vf46 are excellent! Only issue is I don't want to go down path of fmic to keep engine bay looking stock which my Avo tmic does. Also e85 is not available near my place so out of question.

Thanks again

I reckon you are better off with the VF52 to be honest Dutch. Seems to give more poke to get you to that magic 200+ number without compromise, and still with the TMIC in place.

Kinugawa td05-18g will go well. The 9 blade compressor is a better option too.

Housing choice comes down to tuner really. 7cm housing in my opinion will be restrictive, but some people will see it as better for response. 8cm will be less restrictive, but will shift curve to the right a little more, and so on with the 10cm housing.

I feel the kinugawa's are very good value. Particularly compared to the Blouch offerings.

I would compare a td05-18g to a slightly larger version of the vf52.

However for your goals perhaps a vf52 may be better suited and a good condition second hand one can be had for a decent price. For what its worth, I have seen reports showing there are absolutely no differences in compressor and turbine wheels between the vf52, vf30, vf34, vf36, vf37, vf42, vf49, vf53, vf55 and vf56. There are obvious differences with the compressor and turbine housings (to suit different TMIC's and twin vs single scroll etc). Also some chra's are ball bearing vs journal. But other than that they are the same.

Good luck with it

Mick

Thanks dr20

I was thinking the td05 18g 7cm but wanted to get advice/confirmation. Might consider vf52 if one is available at the right price. Id rather a new Kinugawa but if second hand vf52 in good nick, low k's is available on the forum or from wreckers I might consider

Cheers mate

You'd be surprised at how many VF52's come up here and there. Also check the wrx forums too.

I'll start looking but. Might have a few more and prob cheaper. A lot of second hand stuff on here sells for a bit more than I would think second hand items are worth

Well the VF52's are from the 08 wrx if Im not mistaken and a few of those guys tend to upgrade their turbos for more power. So you'll have a better chance in grabbing a low km unit from there at a reasonable price.

Hey mate,

I've had a Kinugawa TD05H-18G 8cm (with standard blade turbine) installed for just under a year now and am still loving it. I bought second hand off Brainy on here.

Running very similar performance mods as you but still have the stock fuel pump and injectors which made a safe 210 kw atw on 18psi tuned by Matt on here. I could get full boost a smidge under 3000 rpm. I have the optional Kinugawa 1 bar actuator and to my understanding it's not ideal if you want more adjustment using the "I" drive. (eg more difference in boost settings between modes)
