Rattle at 2-2.3K Revs Post Tune

Postby Glexen » Fri Dec 12, 2014 11:09 am

I've been noticing a mechanical rattle from the engine when I'm between 2-2.3k revs, It mostly occurs when I'm going up a slight hill. Does not occur on flat surfaces usually. Also doesn't matter what gear I'm in. It just has to be on a slight load up a hill and at 2-2.3k and makes a rattle from the engine.

It's not a consistent frequency rattle either

Didn't noticed this before upgrades and tune.

Upgrades:
Silicone inlet
Invidia Dump Pipe
MSR Tune

Mike from MSR suggested that it could just be the thinner dump pipe, so more sounds can be heard easily from the engine.

Anyone else have any similar occurrence. Or know what it might be.

Dump pipe can sound like a set of extractors a little bit. I would go back to MSR and get them to listen to the sound to be safe in case its pinging

Yeah i actually did take it to him to have a look and it wasn't making the sound when he was driving.

I think that could be it

Just watched this video on youtube

Sounds exactly like that. Might be my AFM also.

Did you add a 3 port ebcs?
They can rattle thus I made a soft mount to attach my Pierburg to the GB bracket.

If Michael says it's not knocking/pinging - it's not pinging. Knock isn't determined from rattles like in the video (which has really bad background static noise to hear anything conclusive?) but with knock sensors and knock ears on the dyno. If you had severe/audible knock the ECU would pull the timing out of the engine and you'd certainly notice the car will be very sluggish.

If you had a faulty MAF you are more likely to knock at higher rpm high load. 2-2.3krpm isn't really a high load area.

The last person to have a rattle from MSR had a loose heat shield. Just try to isolate exactly when the noise is happening - if it's not doing it when Michael drives - why? etc etc

Moral of the story IMO your engine is fine, just need to figure out what the noise is.

This was my first thought. Load at a certain rev-range is likely hitting the natural hamonic frequecy of a loose shield or similar, and causing it to vibrate.

I had the same thing happen once I put my 3" exhaust on - turned out to be an exhaust heat shield down under the boot that was a bit loose.

Other one is the AVCS solenoid going through the EGR hump in that rpm region and the AVCS Cam gear solenoid issue makes the cam gear rattle on its cam stops.

Just on the stock one at the moment ^

But yeah thanks for the input. Ill definitely look into any loose heat shields and go from there.

it doesn't feel like its pulling timing so that's a positive.
