Garrett, Precision or Borg Warner?

The time has come for a bigger turbo and Im finding it difficult to decide between a BW 7670 EFR .92 IWG a precision 6262 or a Garrett Gtx3582r. I love the sound of the BW but fitting it will be difficult. I can get the Garrett for around $2200 with a tial ex housing or do I go bigger top end with the 6262?

I'm aiming for a touch under 400awkw.

Any suggestions would be rad.

Cheers Cam.

Serious! What mounting location are you planning?
What's the specs of the long block?

It will still be twist mount just a little tighter but doable, the long motor will be closed deck, forged things, 2014 sti crank, 14mm head studs, race bearings all assembled with oily love.

Cam, go the EFR from Borg and Warner...... G88 has done wonders with that turbo on a few cars.

Are you also getting CAMs?

Haha I spoke to Michael a few hours after posting this topic, BW efr 7670 EWG 1.05a/r done and dusted.

And yes getting some 272 cams

Sweet, welcome to the land of minimal lag.

Was lucky enough to ride shoot gun in a G88 blessed EVO with one the largest EFR turbos on offer, still running internal waste gate and BOV, intake upgrade and set of cams……. running Jesus juice (98), boost came strong at a little over 2k rpm and it sung all the way to redline, not a single hesitation.

Awesome! I keep hearing crazy good results with the EFR's

Below is a link to Perrin doing some good comparisons between the Borg Warner 7670 .82 and Garrett GTX 3582r .82

Pretty interesting.

It's killing me already mate, haven't driven the SUBY in 5 months now but I dare say it will still be another 2-3 months till it's finished!

Just to throw another into the mix... Turbonetics ;)

Who in the fuck would run 1981 Garrett clone turbonetics? Jesus you're better off with an eBay master power, at least they copied something from the 90's.

same for precision. Massively undersized exhaust wheels, drive like aids. Amazing on strip as they come on the two step with 1:1 exh/map for racing each other to bump in. Otherwise they're just a really shit Garrett clone. Show me a kenworth with a precision expected to be on 50-100% duty for 500,000km.

BW EFR is ducks guts. So much more expensive than it should be. Garrett gt or gtx will do the same job and take up less room, and cost $1000 less. There's a reason be and Garrett are the two big oem suppliers though...

Whilst I agree with your endorsement of Garrett and BW for their renowned longevity and reliability under all sorts of conditions, I do disagree with your view on precisions

The precision billet CEA series (both 1 and more recent version 2) have been proven time and again. If as you claim the exhaust wheels are so undersized, how is it possible for the 6466 and then again 6766 to make more power and flow higher cfm than the 6266 (same exhaust wheel)? If the wheel was maxed out, a larger compressor wheel would result in poor performance than the smaller compressor wheel, which clearly isn't the case.

My decision to run with the 6466 dual bb was for several reasons:

1. Fantastic flow for higher PR's in a medium frame turbo compared to say a gtx3582 (going to run 40-42psi)
2. Compact Chra and comp housing (notwithstanding 0.7 ar)
3. Good value
4. Transient response is similar to smaller gtx3576 with the flow of gtx42xx

66mm wheel is smaller than gtx35 but makes more cfm at better efficiency above 2.0 PR

The 66mm wheels have also been known to make 110% of the rated power rating on e85/c16 race fuels (1000whp for 900hp rated turbo base on cfm) - although granted this is at super ridiculous boost (50psi plus)

All this points not to an inefficient or undersized exhaust wheel.

Sure if you're going for a genuine 1000+hp at modest PR (3 or under) then the efr's have better options but size is a limiting factor.

Tl:dr - precision got it right with the latest series

Also just to clarify - I've had a few different Garret's in my life including the gtx3076 that's on my lib at the moment and I love it.

But comparing the compressor wheels on my gtx and the precision 6466, the precision shits all over it for quality. Have a look closely at the compressor wheels and on the garret you can see the CNC machining marks very clearly, whereas on the precision they are much much much finer, telling me the CNCing process of the billet wheels onthe precision was less about mass production and more about quality.

Again not hanging shit on the Garrett as they're awesome, but trying to balance the feedback against the precision from a heavy hitter such as yourself who people will listen to.

What are the plans for the transmission setup, cam? Driveshafts/geabox/diffs all changing or just going to see how you go?

Just going to drive it till the trans inevitable self destructs then chuck a 6speed in, might Cryo the planetaries before its running to prolong the pain!
