Much heavier than just a tappet for sure, and most audible as the throttle shuts after a blip....Its going to dealer for a diagnose monday, so we'll see what they say.
Thanks for all the ideas and input.

Around 2400rpm to 3600rpm but relatively noise free backing off from say 5000rpm?

Cam timing goes from zero to 15 to 40 degrees pretty quickly and the cam oscillates on its fully advanced stop, causing a metallic rattle.

Dealer replaced engine, noise still present.

The dealer agrees it sounds like bottom end noise. I could hear a rattle on back off from 2-3k rpm. How can you separate a big end rattle from a cam rattle caused by a faulty OCV ? There are no codes showing, or pending.

OK did some checking. UltraGauge shows no items re OCV at all! ECUDatascan lists several for each bank. Finally found Duty cycle - or at least an item that varied with revs and looked like timing relative. At idle (still a bit cold) steady both banks on 9.4. Around 2k it was in the mid 40s, both banks within a couple of points - left maybe 44.5, right a bit of oscillation - 42-45....Is that small difference significant? The other thread showed zero on one bank vs 50-ish on the the other?

Have you checked your oil pick up to see if there are any cracks?

Doesn't sound like ocv's from your test

Sorry to hear of your misfortune although suffice to say this is a relatively common thing with the abomination that is Subaru

Can I ask why you're using a dealership to diagnose (and assuming) repair? If under extended warranty or other type arrangement then I completely understand. However save for that, I would definitely have a reputable independent mechanic that specializes in Subaru look at it.

Mick,
I felt it couldnt hurt to let the dealer diagnose it, and see if I could leverage some help off them as the car was in the bad batch of engines in 08. If it doesnt happen, I will certainly use an independent party to do the work. Note that M&L quoted me $8k, based on a $2.5k new short block, so their labour rate is pretty high.

Needs new timing belt/tensioner, new oil pump, headgaskets, headbolts(order studs anyway) etc plus coolant, oil etc as ancillaries to that $2.5K so closer to $3.5k labour which for swapping parts from block to block etc is well, not reasonable but about what you would expect etc

Not quite so obvious, more audible on back off, but very similar in tone. Suby finally called today asking for data on the services done by M&L...have emailed them the 125 major (march this year at 117k kms, and 112.5k service done at 107k kms in Jan last year. if they say letting a service go to 14months over 10k kms has done it, with bugger all oil usage, it makes the bottom end fragile. And it wasnt lots of short runs, it was just low usage, and being out of country for a couple of months.

At idle its difficult to detect, but with a small rev there is obvious rattle on back off. Nothing like that last video. Cant hear ANYTHING from inside the cabin with bonnet shut.

There is movement at Subaru....I chased them last week, they said they needed data on what services M&L did - I provided that. Chased them today, they asked me to bring the car in so they could get a CVN out of it - did that within a couple of hours. Seeing as a 'CVN' is :-
"CVN (calibration verification number): Number used to verify the integrity of the vehicle software. The manufacturer is responsible for determining the method of calculating CVN(s), e.g. using checksum."

it sounds to me like they want to verify I havent modified the ECU programmimg - maybe trying to find something they can use to reject helping with the fix.

Hope to hear something positive soon!
