Bit of an update on this. The sound is still there but Matt has assured me when he tuned it, the turbo was healthy. It still comes and goes in both S and S#.I was giving it a bit a boot tonight in both modes in which is was making the sound, stopped at a set of lights, once I hit about 3K rpm, there was no rattly whine and the car seemed to boost stronger.

I'm fitting my down pipe tomorrow so I'll have a look around while I'm at it. It will also allow me to eliminate heat shield rattle.

I'm certainly no expert. I blew the turbo back in 2011, but stopped immediately so turbo bearing damage only. The signature was a whistle followed by distinctive waste gate flutter which persisted under idle till I could get it off the road for a tow.

Matt believes it could be a stretched timing belt. After my retune for my exhaust, the sound has become louder but only occurs under boost.

Hey Mosti, any news on this?

Just bought an 07 GT spec B auto and I'm experiencing the same thing. All good in Intelligent mode, slight rattle when pushing in sport, strong rattle when in sport sharp, but not every time

I'll take it back to the dealer anyway but if you know what to check, that will probably save time and sweat!

Thanks mate

really wouldnt push it at all in S or S# if you are hearing rattles. Sounds like knock to me. What fuel are you running?

Always putting Caltex 98 premium. I'll get it checked but I would suspect some heat shield vibrating. it's quite loud and doesn't feel like it's coming from the engine itself.

But the car itself is so quiet it's very noticeable

Quick update, I've left the car at the Toyota dealership where I bought it from, they had a look and suspect the timing belt tensioner. They prefer not to fiddle with it and are arranging an appointment with the local Subaru workshop. More news next week!

I believe mine does it, pretty sure it's the wastegate doing its thing.
I'll have to make a recording :)

Well, I've left the car today, first call early afternoon "Oh don't worry, this is a normal noise, it happens when the car is cold, what you can hear is an air pump blowing into the cylinders, you can hear it when the car is idling"

-Hmm I don't hammer it when the engine is cold so I don't believe it is the noise I mentioned

-... Oh was it a noise when driving?? Oh ok, we'll check again then...

Then they call back 2 hours later

-Don't worry, it's not mechanical, it's a rattle, probably a heatsink or a plastic of some sort

-Ok, are you fixing it then?

-Oooh no, just ask Toyota to do it, as the car is under warranty with them...

-Hmm great. What about the knocking noise on the front right hand-side, that sounds like a bushing is on its way out?

-Oh no, it is just normal noise with the bilstein suspension.

Alright, thanks for nothing, I enjoyed waking up at 5:30 and travel 2 hours this morning to hear that, and having to do it again tomorrow to pick the car up

FYI, you can hear the rattle I'm refering to just after the gear change:

Yeah thats nothing like the noise I get. Mine happens only on boost. Not really noticeable in S more so in S#.
