TB STI S# rattle

Postby Mosti » Tue Sep 16, 2014 5:10 pm

Hopefully someone can help me out here.
I purchased an 07 Tuned by STI wagon 2.5 weeks ago and for the last week I've noticed an odd rattle sound while boosting. I've only really noticed in in S# mode and from about 3800rpm. It doesnt do it every time, maybe 70% of the time. I've experienced pinging (detonation) in my Liberty B4 and it doesnt sound the same.

Even though the pinging doesnt sound the same as your previous ride, I would not rule that out. I would not push the car beyond that rpm range until you get it looked at.

Wouldn't hurt to grab a tactrix cable and do some logging to rule out detonation.

Where would I find one? What do I need besides that and a laptop?

Its very noticeable with windows down but it's not overly loud. The sound is very consistant, doesnt get quicker or louder higher in the rev range.

Log it for sure.

Does it have an upgrade ebcs? They can rattle on boost. I isolation mounted mine :)

Exhaust & turbo heatshields can rattle as well. Welds breaking or loose bolts etc...

I go to great lengths go minimize anything capable of rattling in the engine bay...

The car is stock as.
I'll go over heat shields and bolts around the turbo and exhaust. If I cant isolate the problem, Matt suggested I take the car down to him and he'll do some logs and what not.

Waste gate flutter? If there is such a thing?
Not sure if it's the same on 07 Sti's but I had something that was similar on my Previous MY09 Forester XT with a stock Td04. Not always evident, better heard when boosting 3-4K rpm next to a concrete freeway wall with my window open, bit of a light rattly tappy sound but logs showed no detonation at all. Never did anything about it either.....

It may well be the actuator arm looseness , NASIOC has plenty of discussion on it, eg: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=425018

Thanks for the link muzza

I'll have a look at it tomorrow. From memory my brothers TB STI started making a similar sound when he had it. I'm not sure if he sorted it out or not though.

Nah the VF46's don't have the wastegate chatter that the TD04s have. Could just be a loose part in the engine bay as BBB has said.
