Speedometer not working in first gear (Lib Sti)

Postby SSSRO1 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 2:18 pm

Hey Guys,

Just bought a 2008 Liberty STI and have a small problem with it.

For some reason, the speedometer only seems to work once 2nd gear kicks in.

In first gear, it shows always "0", then as soon as second gear kicks in, it jumps to 40-60.etc (whatever the car's speed is in 2nd gear).

Any reason why this might be happening?

Cheers.

Had the same issue with mine (08 tb sti auto) from brand new.

I had the cluster changes twice and some ratio senor….neither fix yielded any result.

From stand still the speedo didn’t move until the 30-40km/h mark.
Not a soobi anymore, but still slightly dirty

Sounds like this is exactly the same issue. Mine is also an 08 TB STI Auto... wonder if its common on this model/tranny?

Wonder what can be done to fix it. Its not a huge issue I guess, just a bit annoying seeing the speedo jump to 40km/hr all of a sudden..

Mine is still under warranty, might take it to Subaru see what they say. If they offer a solution other than the ones you mentioned above then this might be worth a try.

Cheers!

Hmm I have looked up and it is definately a different car. Mine is #121 while Senator's Build # is higher up in the list.

The speedo works off the ABS sensors.

Not too sure if it's off the ABS on the auto. Apparently it's based off something else on the 5eat, although the manual tranny definitely uses ABS.

You can see this in the logging parameters in RomRaider, the 5eat lacks "ABS sensor speed", instead it has a "wheel speed" parameter available.

As you can see - it's not a problem with any individual car, perhaps just an overall design flaw - viewtopic.php?f=56&t=24024&start=240

Also to the OP - is it really that much of a problem..? You'd only really notice it when getting off the line quicksmart...and in those situations you probably have more important things to keep an eye on rather than the speedo?

That is a bloody interesting one.
The vehicle speed is obviously calculated from the wheel side of things rather than the box as in early models.
I would think it would go into some sort of limp mode as it sees gear engagment and revs but doesnt show speed.

Can you connect and OBD2 reader and see if the vehicle speed sensor works from a mobile device?

This would only apply if the ecu speed is calculated separately to the cluster signal. Someone with more knowledge know this?

Having compared a speedo reading with GPS and an OBD=II display, finding GPS closely matches OBD-II, but speedo reads 6% high, I would guess that the speedo is driven from the car's ECU (with the +6% introduced), which is driven by an ABS sensor. Is there any way you can force it to take off in 2nd ? Try stopping on a steep hill, and let it roll from stopped in neutral, and see what the speedo does - this will tell you if its gear dependant, or speed dependant.
