6mt Transmission oils - whats should to use?

Postby triston » Wed Jul 30, 2014 9:54 pm

Hi all,

I seen a lot of different opinions on what is the best oil to use in the 6mt boxes, and I'm wondering what everyone else is using or not using and why and what they have experienced.

I currently have some issues shifting down into second >20kph (particularly when cold) also generally a bit clunky when first started

Tried rev matching and double declutching for those slow cold downshifts?

Hey BBB thanks for the reply

No, I hadn't thought to try double clutching, but would rather not have to do this every time i need to downshift to second

You're a fan of:
Castrol Syntrax Transaxle & Manual Transmission Fluid - 75W-90, 1 Litre
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Castrol-Syntrax-Transaxle-Manual-Transmission-Fluid-75W-90-1-Litre.aspx?pid=66669#Cross
$30 per litre

I also asked a similiar question on mighty car mods fourm -
Turbo yoda;s reply was:
Castrol Universal 80/90 gear oil(formerly called multitrax).
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Castrol-Multitrax-Transaxle-Manual-Transmission-Fluid-4-Litre.aspx?pid=1276&menuFrom=60202#Cross
$46 per 4 litre

However had the below reply from another member:

I used this, as its what Subaru recommended to me on the phone.
Worst mistake of my ownership so far. Its viscosity both cold and hot are wayyyy above most 80/90 spec gearbox lubes.
Shifts were notchy, and i felt like I had to row slowly. It would grind reverse when cold starting.

After a LOT of research and phone calls to the various companies asking for additive lists, I settled on:

Penrite Pro Gear 75-90.
GL5, copper safe, Mil spec approved, PAO\ESTER base, and its about half as thick (correctly in spec!), and has better shear values, can be used straight pour in LSD's.
Shifts became much smoother, grinding when cold starting is eliminated, I can shift MUCH quicker, and a nice bonus is it didnt smell much :P

It meets all the specs subaru requires afaik, wasnt much more expensive, and I have nothing bad to say about it. (few mates are running it now too, not in subarus, with great results).

Cant speak highly enough of it.

Of course, as with cars, your milage may vary :)
Your advice is in no way wrong; Subaru recommended the Castrol Multi\Universal,and it clearly let me drive the car fine.
Just that I think I might have found something new (hopefully better?) for everyone to try :)

Nice one :)
Not a fan, Syntrax is the stock 6mt oil afaik...
Because my local garage is all Penrite, and I'm already on HPR10 and PS fluid :good:

Double declutch and blip only when gearbox is cold...

Syntrax is great, but good to know the Penrite is a great alternative :)
