07 GT Coolant overflow, possible head gasket?

Postby vroy2007 » Sat Jul 26, 2014 5:48 pm

Hi guys,
So i came back from a drive today and shut off the car, and all off a sudden i saw steam coming out of the grill. Popped the hood and there was coolant everywhere. No signs of overheating before. id did turn on the heater earlier on in the day. and i could also here some bubbly sounds behind the dash post coolant spill. i can also see bubbling in the reservoir tank. Went for a small drive and the car was overheating.

I had the car serviced last week, and all was done was the reservoir tank was topped off with distilled water.

The car only has 50,0000 kms and I'm hoping its not a head gasket already!

i bought some coolant. where do i fill it up from. what should i do. any help appreciated.

Cheers

Radiator end tanks can split over time... Stock replacement from Bursons for around $350 :good:

But that sound like headgasket issues. Plenty of threads here :)
Low k car: coolant might have gone acid and ate the HG, should be changed every 2 years.

Have you had any CELs lately?

Have your been running with any mods not tuned for?

What does your tuner say?
"If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut."

Funny thing is, seems like there is no coolant in the reservoir near the turbo. can a head gasket do that all of a sudden just like that? i thought it would slowly build upto it? there was coolant also near the alternator. The coolant only started spewing out when i shut off the engine. could i maybe be the radiator cap. Cause if it came out of the overflow tank it shouldn't have sprayed everywhere?

Could the bubble i see now just be cause there is no coolant in the system?

Have never had any CEL's. All mods have been tuned for. Awaiting a reply from my tuner.

Appears to be radiator split

Keep in mind BBB, that the radiator plastic drying out is based on age, not distance. It is like putting a piece of steel into salt water, the age/time it is in affects how it rusts, not how much distance it travelled :)

Another member had similar symptoms to you, diagnosed as a hg failure by a reputable mechanic. I took his word and didn't question it, so pulled his engine out and gave him a fresh rebuild. Ended up being a split top tank in the radiator.

Update:

Filled her up from the turbo coolant tank, and could not get her to top off. stop filling her and noticed all the coolant was coming out from under the car. Looked around and she is leaking from underneath the reservoir tank near the bottom black hose. i cant make it if its the hose or the radiator. But it looks like it might be the radiator as there was coolant close to the driver side of the radiator aswell from yesterday.

So obviously this leak was not spraying all around cause the engine was still not fully warmed up today. But the spray of coolant everywhere yesterday, is that just of the pressure in the system when the engine is hot?

Could be. The question is - why/how did the leak appear? Extra pressure in the water system or just ageing components?

Find the leak. Fix it. See what happens.

I thought I could see the crack in the pic! Dimissed it when you said bottom but it was obviously dribbling down the radiator and dropping off the bottom tank!

Fixed!!! Drove it around 15kms from the garage, popped the hood no bubbles in reservoir tank. Engine Temperatures stayed at 83 deg on the freeway, and fluctuated between 88 and 93 deg in traffic which i think is normal.

Thank you all for your help :)
