Exhaust MY08 Lib STi

Is it worthwhile getting a new (3”) exhaust on the MY08 Lib STi’s?

I guess the MY07 Lib STi would be the same. Has anyone done this? And was there a noticeable power increase? I have been told the Lib STi's have a pretty good exhaust as is, and unless you go monster tune its not worth upgrading?

Mods I am considering when back in Aus next month. Has anyone done similar mods to previous Lib STi? Any feedback or suggestions would be great..

Tune EcuTeK $1995.00.
MRT Front Dump Pipe and Centre Section Only - $ 1,698.00 (Retains Standard Rear Mufflers)
MRT / Hyperflow TMIC - $ 1,450.00 (new Cross Flow Design)
MRT / Hyperflow CAI - $ 480.00 (includes K&N Pod Filter)

Would it be worthwhile getting bigger fuel pump?

Yeah, I'm all stock at the moment and am considering getting an exhaust as well. Increased noise level and voiding my warranty is my primary concerns.

In that case, did you paint the tip of your exhaust blue? cos my stock STi exhaust doesn't have that...

Have the same set up on MY08GT-b with MRT mufflers but no CAI & gained about 40 Kw, no need for new fuel pump if you are not going to mod any further imo.

Dyno results here http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?t=1431

That's just dirt.

depends what your plan for the car are in the long run.
Are you planning to fit bigger turbo or anything near the end.
The standard exhaust does flow very well from factory until a certain point like when you replace the turbo.

e.g. I had a customer where we only changed the dump pipe, chucked it on dyno, pretty good results without changing the cat back. After we put a bigger turbo on, then the centre pipe and mufflers became a big restriction.

Not sure.. This is my first Subaru (& turbo) so I am learning as I go.. I don’t want to lose drivability or lose too much bottom end to gain top end.. If a bigger turbo can get me more power without the car being a hassle to drive I would definitely consider it.. Had a supercharged VS II GTS for a while and it was a burden (three engine rebuilds in less than two years & horrible to drive in traffic).. I guess it was a commodore thou.. If the stock STi exhaust was sufficient for these minor mods I would just upgrade it later on (same time as turbo).. But if a new exhaust will give me power gains now (with out bigger turbo) I would get it done straight away..

Thanks for the info, those dyno’s look impressive, an extra 40kW should keep me happy for a while.. I can’t believe I am out here for another 5 weeks before I get to drive the Lib/STi thou.. Ahhh its driving me insane.. While over here I drive a 80’s Toyota landcruiser ute, doesn’t even have a radio.. Speed limit is 50km/h.. Get to experience some serious 4x4 action thou..

Adam I think you will find the dump pipe, larger tmic and tune get you some nice gains. the stock airbox induction is pretty good with reckon you are better of spending the money on something other than CAI. There should be an AVO dump pipe coming out very shortly as well.

I have the Ecutek on a MY08 B Spec and it is very much worth while. No hardware changes and tuned specifically for 95RON and it saw 60% improvement at 3300rpm. If you can afford the exhaust get it but if I had to spend $2000 I'd get the tune first and maybe just mufflers for the sound. Apparently the factory turbo can only push so much air and the factory pipes can cope with that. The restrictions are the mufflers and cat. I have a dyno graph showing before and after but not sure how to attach it to this post.

I will definitely go with the EcuTeK & the TMIC, as its positive comments all round for those mods.. I am hearing different stories about the other (exhaust & CAI) mods thou.. A few people have said they wont really improve performance much.. Unless they are guaranteed to improve performance over the stock STi parts I will not bother with them.. I was going to go the “MRT Front Dump Pipe and Centre Section Only - $ 1,698.00 (Retains Standard Rear Mufflers)” to keep the exhaust as quiet as possible as the full upgrade does increase noise volume a lot more.. I must be getting old lol.. I don’t mind spending the money if it improves performance of the car but I don’t want to spend my hard earned money for no reason.. So from what I am hearing so far the stock exhaust & air intake aren’t really worth spending any money on unless I decide to get a whole lot more serious with the mods??????..

Yes, on their own they won't do much to greatly improve overall performance. CAI makes more noise and adds about +5-8 kw. While a catback exhaust will net you about +9-10 kw and some more noise (there are alternatives that do have gains without too much additional noise).

However these sorts of mods are meant to compliment other mods. Because once you do the TMIC and perhaps a dump pipe, you now have a situation where the intake and the exhaust become the bottleneck to unleashing that newfound power.

It's a horrible chain reaction effect. You upgrade one part, and find that another part is preventing maximum power gains. So you upgrade that, but then find yet another part is holding things back. That's why my car is stock. I refuse to spend money needlessly and get caught up in this vicious cycle.

I don’t mind spending the money if it improves performance of the car but I don’t want to spend my hard earned money for no reason.

Haha. There's always a reason for upgrades. Some people want the bling, while others want performance.

So from what I am hearing so far the stock exhaust & air intake aren’t really worth spending any money on unless I decide to get a whole lot more serious with the mods?

All depends on what your priorities are. If you're after absolute performance, you should definitely get these along with any upgrades to the TMIC and dump pipe. However I guess that's not always necessary. Trieu, who used to frequent this forum and had a MY05 GT, only did the CAI, TMIC, and tune and that was more than enough for him. His car was able to push quite hard even with a stock exhaust.

Good luck! I look forward to hearing about your mods in the near future.
