This 'milk bottle' is a sound reducer, dirt and water trap. I did this mod, personally think it is a waste of time. Blocked off the bottom (because it was making a horrible induction noise presumably due to the sharp edge on the hole with bottle removed). Slightly more induction noise but not worth the 10min it took IMO.

I think it needs to have most of the opening to be sealed to be more effective though...

Pssshhhttttt! woot!

Really? LOL post up a video or soundclip!

I might have exaggerated a bit... You really can't hear much over road/engine noise.
Hit the right stretch of smooth road though, cruise along, then put the foot down and there's a bit of extra whistle.
You have to really listen for it though. My BOV on lift-off is significantly louder.
Like I said, it might make more noise if the resonator hole was blocked and the whistle was the only inlet.
I might mod it at some stage - maybe next time I change the air filter.
As Manaz says, most of the air is coming in from the front intake anyway.
Maybe I could mount it there... :beta:

It does all of those things, but not absolutely - there are other holes in the bottom of the airbox that water will drain out of, dirt builds up everywhere in the airbox before the filter, and sound reduction, I'd be surprised if there's a lot of difference in sound with the bottle there and with it gone (and the hole sealed).

All that said, it must do them well enough that Subaru bother to build and install it to start with. Of course, again, we get back to the fact that Subaru build cars for the masses, and what's appropriate for the masses may not always be accepted by enthusiasts are appropriate for them. If they always got it 100% right, nobody would do any mod, ever.

:)
