Banjo turbo oil filter

Hi Everyone

Apologies if this is a double post but I cannot find the answer anywhere on club.liberty.

Can anyone confirm if the Australian delivered 2007 Liberty GTB have the banjo oil filter for the turbo. I am hoping to hear from someone who has actually remove/cleaned the filter on a 07 gt / gtb.
I have enquired with Subaru Toowong and the 25+ year "experience" service dept. foreman was adamant his never heard/seen of them and they don't exist for Australian delivered models.

"The mesh screen which is located inside the banjo bolt that secures the turbocharger oil supply pipe to the back of the right side cylinder head should be checked to make
sure it is not clogged or restricted especially if the condition of the oil is questionable or as to when the last oil change was performed. If clogged or restricted, it will reduce or cut off the
oil supply to the turbo resulting in failure. The oil supply pipe should also be checked to make sure that there are no obstructions."

I have no idea about the banjo filter.

BUT... I will say stay away from Subaru Toowong. They're shocking with service, and are only interested in your problems if you've bought a brand new car from them.
There are waaaay better Subi specialists in Brissy. Such as Serge LaMonaca, John French Motors etc.

Yes banjo filters exist on all gen 4 turbo variants

The good new with the 2.5T is that they are inlet cam side only. :)
There is one in the banjo top of the block under the turbo inlet pipe: MY07+still unconfirmed.

And according to this thread on LGT there may be more.
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.p ... 22758.html

Personally I've checked the LHS OCV banjo: no filter.
I will ask Jarrod to check his 2.5T block and heads for the other two or three locations.

Further to this, I believe these filters are more for in the event of an engine failure the scrhapnel will not mince the turbo (in the case of a bearing failure etc). During normal operation there should be nothing flowing through your oil to cause any issue to the turbo and if there was it would ultimately block the filter and cause damage from starvation.

Just for interest sake (because when swapping turbos you might come across this) The turbo side banjo bolts come with different size holes and should not be changed from original as different turbos require different levels of oil flow and some require less (and increasing in this case is not a good thing as you may think). These pictures are not from our vehicle but show the difference (the difference in person is bigger than it seems in the photo). The small one (STI) suits a BB turbo whilst the larger diameter was for non-BB. Yes the BB actually requires less oil flow and higher oil flow can damage the seals (apparently) and reduce performance (not sure how). This was confirmed by Al from AMAUTO previously Sunspares many years ago and he knows his stuff.

Oil shouldn't damage the bearing seals (oil is just fine, but contaminations in the oil might be different).

The increased flow increases the resistance on the bearing balls/rollers/etc. There is an optimum level of lube depending on the bearing type; journal requires the higher flow initially because they are more susceptible to oil drain when not moving, but once up to operating temp, they actually need less oil than ball bearings to remain moving because (flak jacket on) they're a much better design of bearing and are better able to withstand the speeds and forces involved in turbo CHR assemblies.

Its more about too much flow damaging or overcoming the seals afaik.
Another reason its good to have a 100% functioning PCV system as a stuck PCV can apparently pressurize the turbo oil feed overcoming the seals.

Its interesting you say that Sean because when I looked up the old thread to get the pics the person that posted them said he had experienced a noticeable improvement to turbo spool when he fitted the correct banjo bolt - who would have thought. In his case the larger diameter was incorrectly fitted so he fitted the smaller one to resolve as it was an earlier VF BB turbs. Interesting stuff. I am sure a lot of people wouldn't think this to be the case.

wrong banjo bolt results in too much oil in turbo bearing.

Removed the filter today. Was really clean, couple bits of debris here and there but definitely 80%+ clean.
I am glad I removed the filter even though it was clean.

Nice one.
So was that the banjo on the block and under the turbo inlet?

Also the turbo oil feed restrictor banjo bolt is a different beast, afaik it found on the turbo itself (or in the latter part of the turbo oil feed line).

Correct the turbo banjo should be on top of the turbo holding the oil feed line to the turbo. With the heat shield off you should be able to remove fairly easily.

I have uploaded a pic where you can see the turbo banjo on the far left.

I found this inline filter and restrictor on the Forced Performance website.
Available in ball or journal bearing orifices.
I have to review what other parts I need to fit my AVO400LGT, but I'll probably order one of these in black, since I'll be removing the block top banjo filter during the install.
Since my "new" turbo has been refurbed, I'd like to keep it that way.
LMK if you want to combine shipping.
