Wanting louder exhaust

Postby Monkey » Wed Aug 28, 2013 4:46 am

Hi all

I don't know much about exhausts, so please excuse my ignorance.

I have an 07 tbSTI with a Fujitsubo dual exhaust with 3"(?) pipes going into 2 x stainless oval canons. It may be this model: http://www.fujitsubo.co.jp/prods/detail ... 1/00000817
The exhaust looks awesome, but the sound is too quiet for the look of it.
I'm not sure if it's full exhaust or cat back - I presume the latter. I believe it was about $1900 installed (done by previous owner)

Is there an inexpensive way to make it louder? I'm happy with the fuel economy and performance, and I like that it doesn't have the dreaded freeway drone you get from cheap exhausts, but I'd really like more noise (within a legal / acceptable range - eg. another 5-10dB ) at 3500+ or 4000+ RPM. The only time it makes a little bit of noise is during a cold start and at 5000+RPM under load (ie. driving). I definitely want to retain minimal noise at low revs and when cruising, but would like more of a growl when accellerating hard / from 4000 revs

Spending $2k+ on headers (or even $1k) is not an option I'd consider at the moment as we've recently bought a house. Nor do I want to replace the existing mufflers.

I presume these are the only two options but I thought worth getting some opinions...? eg. wasn't sure if something can be added in between the cat and exhaust purely for sound which doesn't affect performance.

Any advice most appreciated.

Maybe look into a high flo catalytic converter or a smaller resinator.

You will find those mufflers are what is keeping the noise down.

I have a dump, 3" cat, 3" centre with NO resonator , 2.5" y pipe into twin mufflers similar to yours ( cheaper brand tho ) and I honestly expected it to be farken loud..... It's not.

Windows up and you get a nice hum . Windows down it does get nice and loud but I have zero drone.

My wife hates loud exhausts and not once has she complained about the noise.!! Been on the freeway and nothing!!

It really depends on the mufflers.

There's another member on here who is a mate of mine. Has a TCP turbo back exhaust with cannons on the back and it is a different noise to mine and is much louder and has that drone!!
Not a Subaru...... Something MUCH better

NOPE..... That's shit too. Bus anyone??

David

You’ve got one of the best engineered free flowing exhausts you can get.

Check if your dump has been up graded with an aftermarket one… if not that would be the first thing to change before hacking the Fuji system you have now.

Cheers guys. I'll look into a Phat Dump pipe.
They seem to be around $950 to buy new if/when can be sourced? Any idea of installation cost - $300?

Should cost less than that for install. It's just unbolting then rebolting some bolts.

A pro should be able to do it in no time so long as there are no fitment issues.

I paid abt 300 but let go because I'd spend a whole day trying to get the last bolt off and ended up having to put everything back on. Had a tune a few days later so just let the shop do it. If I had my time again, I would have bought a 6 point socket to reduce slippage. It's not hard to do, just not much room. Once the head rounded, it only got worse. Save the 300 and do it yourself cos an entire exhaust would take no more than 3 hrs. Catback took abt 30min.
