was under the bonnet the other night and realised i had oil in the coolant reservoir. i dont know what could be causing this, head gasket? turbo on it way out?

has this happened to anyone before who could point me in the right direction?

The most recent case of this happening is Pete. Are you losing coolant too?

Or feel anything is wrong with the engine? Misfiring? Excessive steam in the morning? Any CELs?

Pressurization of your cooling system? Leaking out of the coolant system caps?

nah engine seems fine. no steam on cold start ups. lost a little cooolant not heaps and no overheating. i had a cel for my cat converter but that was all sorted. i put new radiator caps on about 2 weeks ago dont know weather that has anything to do with it?

If he was getting excessive steam in the morning (and finding oil in the coolant reservoir), what would the cause be? just curious.

read in here, if this is what your experiencing? then yes head gaskets gone or youve lifted the head - oem headstuds are designed to stretch unlike aftermarket ones...

This happended to me on E85 and hence why I ended up doing my phase II build....I can point you to someone who can fix it for you * phil lowe *

A blown head gasket can see coolant leak into the cylinders. This occurs very slowly initially and whilst the car is not running for longer periods such as overnight. During normal running the cylinder pressure doesn't allow the water to enter.

Therefore when you start up your car, water doesn't ignite, but is forced out into your exhaust where it evaporates due to heat causing excessive amounts of steam.

damn that sucks. what did this roughly cost you Jaydece? should i take it to subaru to get the confirmation that its the head gasket?

just take it to a good mechanic (Subaru are rip-off merchants) and they'll do a simple TK test to work out if it's the head-gaskets

Check under your oil cap - white foam is an almost certain giveaway of a head gasket failure and/or lifted heads/stretched bolts.
