Power steering whine when turning.

Postby jusssig » Sat Jun 01, 2013 8:30 pm

Hey guys,

I am getting a much louder-than-usual whine from the power steering when turning. Also there is a slight knocking at low speed as if theres a flat tyre. I thought it was just low on steering fluid but found it topped up. Has my Power steering pump carked it? if so how much is to replace or repair?

I was hoping it might be due to this:

http://youtu.be/1ifANBSb8DA

or

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhgLDOanBJI <---- sound is the same and in comments he reveals its the same issue as first clip - aerated fluid getting into the pump.

It started early this morning (very cold) - drove fine for about 4-5 kms then just started whining, so limped back home. engine running smooth.

Subaru Liberty GT Spec-b my07. serviced about 4 weeks ago.
any help would be great.

Cheers,

Justin

I noticed last night a slight ticking/clicking noise that seems to be coming from my front left wheel approx. only happens if im just rolling or slightly accelrating up my driveway or into a parking spot. Sound familiar?

Yes sounds familiar - not so much a sound but can feel it in the steering wheel. feels like a flat tyre.

I just got a quote from a specialist steering place who said its most probably a leak - quoted $650 to fix.

I'm wondering whether i should give it a crack myself.

It cost me less then that to get a fully refurbed unit installed.

I dont see how he can quote you when he thinks its a leak and doesnt know what it actually is. For all you know it could be something that needs a spray of oil and your gunna pay $650 for that. And if it is something serious hes just gunna pile shit on you.

Yeh true. That was over the phone as well. The shit thing is anywhere i take it they're going to quote for a new pump, whether or not its just a new o-ring needing replacing or what. i might just look around for a refurbed pump and pay for labour.

Yeah probs a better idea.
Or evenm try turing everything off. Like i discovered last night my ticking seems to be my A/C pump or something to do with aircon cause mine stopped as soon as i turned it off. So maybe try that and see if it still does it?
Try and centralise the problem and go from there i guess.
Good luck!

I had this issue on my gen 3. Found in a thread somewhere that if the belt is overtightend it can give the pump an air leek making the steering fluid airated with other symptoms of being stuffed. Fixed it myself kept flushing and sucking new fluid in lid on driving hard left and right to circulate the fluid. After loosening belt and flush came good again

Sorry for the grave dig but I recently picked up a Gen 4 3l and this noise seems to be getting worse when cold. Hopefully the statutory warranty will fix this. My mechanic said that the top power steering hose is sucking in air.

The pump on your Gen4 GT Turbo is not common to the pump on either of the You Tube videos.
The first video with Justin Hobbs is a Gen3 Liberty/Outback NA pump (different to Gen4 GT Turbo)
The second video is a Impreza NA Pump, different again and different to a Gen4 GT Turbo.
