Should the air pump come on on EVERY cold start ie left overnight startups or even when car has been left for a week or so ?

Afaik it comes on every single time you start your car to regulate the amount of oxygen in the fumes being released into the atmosphere, it is more for the environment than anything else. This is second hand info though.

Thanks Rome I'm talking about the noise that stays on for about a minute on cold starts.

Yes if the car has been left long enough for a cold start it will come on!! But if you have just enough heat in the motor then it wont come on or come on for a short period of time.

Have you been getting and cel's???

I get a CEL on the odd occasion (more common lately)

I am having thoughts that this may be related..

Only get the CEL (+ limp mode) when starting the car, and having driven for less than 10-15 seconds. Turn the car off and wait 1-2 mins and its gone..

Weird.....

I have not had any cels at all

Just no air pump on at anytime .. It used too :/

It is a secondary air system that is monitored under the OBDII emission self check.
It is used to combat high levels of HC (hydrocarbon) that are present in the exhaust due to the richer mixture of a cold start before the O2 sensors come online.

It should log a code and if the problem fixes itself the current code is deleted and the history code remains.
The system may even ignore it once the O2 sensors are up and running.


I have heard of Forester turbos having this issue. The fix seems to be rip out the pump and re-flash the ECU to ignore the missing air pump.

I removed my air pump and drove around with it plugged up for over a month, no drama. I got a Check Engine Light (cel) and couldn't use my cruise control or play with the si drive.


If it has shit itself just get them to turn the air pump off in the ecu and pull it off!!

This air pump of mine is in consistent some mornings upon cold start it comes on and other times not.

I asked Subaru service and they just told me its critical to be looked at ?? WTF ??

Just remove it.
