twisties wrote:Hi all,

I've come across this thread while trying to fix a hesitation/stutter issue on my 09 XT Foz. I also got the CEL code P0011 which is drivers side OCV solenoid.

I removed the avcs banjo bolts on the weekend and found the filters had already been removed. I also tested both OCV's with a 9v battery and they both moved freely. Reassembled the car and the hesitation still exists. Is it possible that the OCV's can still be failing even though they respond normally when tested with the 9v battery?

I don't have a tactrix so I've been unable to log any of these parameters (although I do have torque and an ELM dongle, though they don't seem to be capable of measuring VVT - unless someone knows how to make a PID in torque to measure that?)

I don't really know what else to try now so I'm thinking of just replacing the OCV's anyway.. (can get 2 OEM delivered from partsouq for about $160aud).

Does anyone have any better ideas than that? Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Seen it in a few SH9's and only needed the driver side one replaced. Saves buying 2 OCV's ;)

One might work but replacing both, or having a spare is great too.
In my experience most need both replaced. iirc in 3 instances out of 5. :)

Thanks kido and benny - I'll get 2 just to be safe. I'd be kicking myself if I just bought one and they both ended up needing replacement.

I just want to confirm that even though they seemed to be working fine when tested with a 9v battery they may still need replacing? As I said I don't have the equipment to do any logging so I'm kind of guessing here :S

Yes you can go bananas cleaning and testing them to no avail.
Or it works for a while then fails again.

Mine are doing well, replaced at 160K, now at 220K, I'll swap sides next oil change just to mix it up :)

Ok great, thanks again Ben! I'll order 2 amd hopefully that's the last I'll have to deal worth that problem :)
Great thread by the way, it's the only one I've found that discusses it fully.

If you don't need the second ocv, it should be easy to sell for your cost.
Have you logged the exhaust avcs yet?
Here's that link for related issues again:

There's an exhaust AVCS too?!

I haven't been able to log anything as I don't have a tactrix cable, only a bluetooth ELM327 dongle. The main reason I believed it was the drivers side AVCS was because I got a CEL for P0011 which is: Diagnostic Procedure with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) [ENGINE (DIAGNOSTICS)(H4DOTC)]
DTC P0011 INTAKE CAMSHAFT POSITION - TIMING OVER-ADVANCED OR SYSTEM PERFORMANCE (BANK 1)

I have been experiencing intermittent shuddering between 1000-2000rpm and so pieced together that my drivers side intake OCV might be the culprit (having checked for banjo bolt filters but finding they'd already been removed).

Do you think that's sound reasoning? I should probably get a tactrix and do some logging but I am really trying to stop spending money on this car, but then again buying new parts without being sure that they're faulty probably won't help..

PreFL 2.0L GT's have dual aka quad avcs, inlet and exhaust.
PostFL 2.5T GT's are inlet only avcs.

For a complete diagnosis, its best to check/log the inlet and exhaust avcs (the latter if you have it).
In my experience a faulty OCV wont always trigger a CEL, leaving owners wondering what the issue is.

As discussed in the thread its a self calibrating system using iirc the crank and cam sensors and the OCV's.
IIRC a faulty cranks sensor will mean a non starting engine, dirty cam sensors can affect AVCS, but the issue is generally faulty OCV's, or issues related to the oil supply to the OCV's and turbo.

A dead or dying battery will also negatively affect the system so check that its functioning/charging properly; and that the alternator works; and clean any dirty or corroded grounds.

Thanks Ben, I've got the 09 Foz with a 2.5L so that would explain the inlet only AVCS.

2 new OCV's only cost me $160 from Partsouq so I've ordered them and if that doesn't solve it I'll have to buy/borrow a tactrix and do some logging.

Thanks again for your help mate :)

Ok giving back to the community for anyone else who follows this thread in the future.

I've written a How To on removing AVCS banjo filters and OCV's at Ozfoz and posted it here for you guys:

Update: I got my OVC's in the mail from Partsouq in about a week. Put the RHS in after work yesterday because that is the one I suspected was failing and I didn't have time to do the passenger side. So far there's a 99% improvement. The major hesitation/stutter is gone. I can't tell if there's still a slight bit of hesitation or if I'm just being hyper-sensitive because I'm looking for it. Either way I'm going to change the passenger side on the weekend.
Something else to note, and I don't know if this is just a coincidence or what, but having driven it for 1 day since putting the new part in my average fuel consumption has gone from 10.4L/100k down to 9.0L/100km. Come to think of it, I used to get in the 9's and it went up into the mid 10's ever since I started noticing this problem about 2 months ago.

Good luck to anyone else who's chasing this problem!
