Forge piston help

Hey guys I recently done a low end bearing in my 09 GTB so I'm up for a rebuild...
Iv been quoted about 5k on a basic rebuild and about 1500 for forgies from MSR..

I'm a little undecided if I should get them or not, as I don't really want a loud sounding engine ( been told they sound like a deisel)
So what I'm asking is, is there anything I should consider when doing the rebuild and if anyone can shed light on how loud the forgies can be??

If done correctly you shouldnt have any diesel sounds....You may get some piston slap on start up...but will quiet down once warmed...oil choice will play a factor in this also...

Phil Lowe himself recommends cosworth pistons for low / no noise plus the fact they are a great piston all round....

But having said this machine work to the block will need to be done.....for any type of forge piston setup...dont make the same mistake I made where I dropped forge pistons without any block work at all...just my suggestion and advice...others may suggest differently...

My mahle pistons sounded loud upon start up and there was slight piston slap once warmed...I'm yet to see how these CP pistons go....but allot of machine work has gone into my block to minimize this from happening..

What oil were you using?

Don't be too concerned about the forgies, done right the sound is no issue.

Well the last service I had was about 8000kms ago done by the local mechanic and it was a log book service so I'm assuming the same oil in the service book??

But I can't be sure with that either...

If you’re planning to keep the car go with forged internals.

You might want to also get the engine inspected to understand why the big end failed……. May be tuned, oil, fuel related etc…..

Would be wise you get the heads serviced and stronger heads studs and an aftermarket head gasket, belts, pulleys water pump etc….. it has to all come off either way.

The oil that your mechanic used would be good to know..

All I read about is Delvac 15w 40 and how good it is..

Heat wise and protection.

Should be dumped every 5 k though..

That might be good for shutting up a built engine, but I wouldn't use it in an unopened one.

Well I'm assuming that MSR who is doing the repairs will be able to tell why it has happend??

Let's hope so...... considering the car was only recently tuned by him, he should be keen to find the root cause.

Might be best to get an external opinion if that's the case

Fair call, cos if it was his fault, I doubt he would own up!

All the best with the rebuild.

Correct.
