And my condolences but kudos for sharing/admitting to it 8) .
I literally cried when I had a very light bumper scratcher recently...

Just a heads up: there's a low K standard STi torsen FLSD going on Rexnet right now if you're considering installing one when the clutch goes in, i just met the vendor at Chasers (bought some other bargain goodies from him).

So the Jim mentioned that some flywheels were tricky to machine due to having a stepped face, does that apply to us (MY07 6MT).
Apologies for all the Q's but I want to be fully informed (n00b)... BIG THANKS so far, everyone!!!

The 6MT flywheels have a stepped outer edge.
I have seen them being machined, No one ever mentioned it being difficult, its just that they cant use a massive stone to do it.

Oh wow: thanks for the info! Most appreciated!
Glad to see other members are rockin' the Tux (for the laydeez  ) since we're locked in a perpetual battle between Gentleman and Hoon here... 8)

So the OP's FW might need machining (shuddering) and I might get away with no machining (babied, smooth as, just old)?

If your doing the clutch, machine the fly just to be safe.
nothing is better then brand new surfaces that are true, even babied flywheels develop hot spots and high/low points

Just imagine you didnt do it, and a week/month later you were shuddering and had to rip it all back out, for $50 its worth doing it once, doing it right.

Here's another bit of info.

You have to make sure what flywheel you have, a standard type or a dual mass flywheel.

Now my mechanic rang SUBARU to get them to check using my vin/chassis number. They said mine HAS a dual mass fly wheel. My mechanic said that didnt sound right and pulled the starter motor out and looked in and surprise surprise it DOES NOT have a dual mass flywheel.

So do the check 1st, cause subaru as per usual, knew didly fecking squat.
Not a Subaru...... Something MUCH better

NOPE..... That's shit too. Bus anyone??

I don't think a 6 speed dual mass flywheel exist tbh.
Only 5 slotters.

Maybe the confusion arises from the 'stepped' face fly wheel vs DMF thing.
Be great to have clarity on the subject.
Even JB said "do the research or we won't know till it's out!"

I'd love to learn to swap em and also to set backlash/preload on diffs... Down the track maybe.

Subaru was given the vin/chassis number..... How more detailed can you get??

Seriously just ignore the subaru info, useless as always. If you want to know what you have, then pull out your starter motor and have a look in at the flywheel . If it has, like a 2 plate setup then its a dual mass. If it looks like a normal flywheel maybe with a stepped look then its a normal flywheel.

My mechanic did just this to make sure, as i had already bought a clutch.

Swapping them, installing, doing boxes diffs etc, is all really easy, just take the time to learn properly.

Im firm on my belief there are no dual mass factory 6 speed flywheels about, seen alot of cars and boxes, and have only ever come across this in 5 speeds.

Subaru are a great resource of knowledge, until they are not, just like anything.

Yeah I've read some how-to's, the tricky bit seems to be getting the lever bit for clutch actuation set properly without bending it or messing it up. Maybe

Its pretty easy, just make sure you bleed the master and slave fully, and your golden.
I would reccomend a Braided Clutch line at this point anyway.

Its a hands on learning experience, but do it one, and you will know for good.
