Clutches??

Postby Boostaddict » Sun Sep 09, 2012 9:07 am

Gotta get a new clutch for the Lib. Emailed exedy and they came back with 2 options.

1- FJK-7737SO. Sports organic kit. Stage 1 upgrade.

2- FJK-7737HDCB . Heavy duty cushion button. For light to moderate power levels but still daily drivable.

Anyone had either of these?? Or any other suggestions. I got a mechanic mate who got prices and the HDCB was actually cheaper then the SO. But just worried about how heavy the HDCB will be.

Thanks in advance my fellow forum members

According to this forum, you can't go wrong with a Jim Berry clutch built to your specific requirements regarding power levels and pedal weight :D
But yeah, I subbed this thread because I'm considering all options for the hopefully not too near future!

I have seen a lot of hate around for the exedy ones but have no experience with them myself.
Hopefully someone who has I'll chime in,
otherwise, you should be able to find some posts on the topic around here.

Dont go cushion button if you have a daily driver in traffic - becomes very annoying trust me

Dont have experience specifically with liberty clutches but I'd go a stage 1 if you don't have massive power and don't plan on having massive power in future

Otherwise Jim berry is your man if you are.

I think i might just stick with the stage 1 as its a dailey and i dont have big power.

I will have eventually but i think my wife would slaughter me if i suggested a gtx35r and supporting stuff within the next couple of years.

Just go exedy stage 1 or HD, make sure you remain with an organic friction material.
They have the exact same pedal feel as most other clutches(hydraulic clutches win at this)

They can handle pretty impressive power figures. HD's can go upto 240kw atw without slip issues, possibly higher but i dont have my own experience at higher power levels to say.

2 questions: :D
1 - @ Dan: what are the symptoms that your clutch is due for replacement? E.g: age/K's, slipping in 5th or 6th at freeway speed, shuddering etc.?

2 - I spoke with Jim Berry, he couldn't remember exactly what clutch/flywheel combo might be in my postFL 06 build MY07 GT-B 6MT... Can I simply give him the quoted Exedy part numbers Dan listed above?

Symptons are basically slipping, or in a bad case shuddering.

Im rather aggresive on clutches, but i still manage to get 40000 out of some of them(car dependant, the RS was one every 6 months)

If it has 100,000k's or close i would replace and upgrade it just so it is done, and you dont have to worry about it for a few years.
Also the thrust and Spigot bearing take an absolute sphinctering of abuse ona daily basis, and they deserve to be retired before they quit(trust me, prevention better then cure in this particular circumstance)

If your after a new cheap exedy PM me, i can help out mate.

Cheers.....Dan

Great, thanks!

From Jackson: "yeah its a pull type :) " Jackson kindly gave me his JBRC invoice number for Jim to reference...

1 more Q on another subject Jim spoke of at length: what is the stock flywheel material/config for postFL 06 build MY07 GT-B 6MT ?

Symptoms wise. Shuddering on take off, even on really light take off. If i wanted to get a little funky on launch it just wouldnt do it, just slip. Yet i could grab 2nd pretty hard. Eh dunno !!! It also slipped in 5th and 6th.

I ended up getting the stage 1 sports organic and was booked in for this friday to be put in but i had a slight disagreement with a commonwhore ( see awesome diy mod in mod section ).

So once i get my car back i will be putting the clutch in and a tune.
