Definitely screwed. Once it warms up (15+ mim of driving), it's clunk-clunk-clunk and jerky when turning at low speed like when parking. A stock diff is going back in, so no point doing it unless there was something wrong. Not an upgrade/mod.

160,000km now. I bought it with under 150,000 and it already had the issue then. Apparently can be caused by driving with uneven worn or sized tyres, or hard launches/abuse. I doubt mine was either, but who knows. I read somewhere that 100,000km is normal life for one. Not so much the mechanical gears, but the viscous part.
The heat may also play a part. My car was a WA car and now North QLD. Another local liberty owner mentioned that quite a few WRX owners in the area have had centre diff isssues too (not sure of their age/km though).

EDIT: It's not undrivable, and unless turning sharply at lowspeed, it's not that noticeable. But it's definitely getting worse, and parking is pretty embarrassing. Matt (KiDo) actually diagnosed it when he first tuned my car. I hadn't consciously noticed back then.

I have posted this in the Diff thread as well, but as a word of caution, I'll post it here too.
So turns out the diff that was supplied is wrong :?. It's apparently a US Spec one with an extra cog. So I'm stuck paying dealer prices $1400 for them to supply one from Syd. $500 more than what I paid from a Syd based company who sourced it from Japan. I'm interstate atm, away from home so I have no chance of sourcing another one elsewhere. Annoying, but as long as I get my money back, it's not a total disaster.

Is there an upgrade available for your centre diff? I've seen some Cusco diffs go for not much more than $1400, might be better value?

I haven't looked into upgrades, but there probably is. I was warned against some like Cusco though, because they change the front/rear drive bias of the car - making it more RWD. That might be what some people are after, but not really what I am. But I'll look into it, maybe one day I'll uprage :) (apparently not such a hard job to replace, and may be worth it if I can sell the stock one for good money).

Interesting.
Do you have part numbers? I'd like to look into why it's not compatible.
Here's the 06/07 info on OF.
http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/e ... tration_1/
I'll have to go deeper on another site to dig up the ADM specific differences between 07/08... If any...

The issue deserves its own thread and kinda has one here:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20872
MY08 6mt appears to have a specific c-diff p/n: 38913AA200
Whereas MY04-MY07 both H6 and 2.5t use p/n: 38913AA112
And this may also explain the grey area around 6mt clutch compatibility.
I'd say its got something to do with the 08+ WRX STi gearbox change... Lib 6mt were phasing out and the STi's 41/59 DCCD 6mt's with the 3.54 rear diff were coming in.

The 6mt Cusco Tarmac diff is out of production afaik.
Leaving an 08+ dccd c-diff complete with input and output shafts as the best upgrade possible afaik.
Although some Motorsport users prefer the simplicity of the non dccd setup apparently...

Sti 20kg C-Diffs were available but only for 5mt iirc.

Wow, thank u for all the detailed info BBB! Very interesting. I didn't know the centre diffs were almost as much in a grey area as clutches.

I don't have any part#s unfortunately. The box that arrived was a Subaru Genuine Parts box, but no number on it. The invoice only had '6MT Centre Diff' on it, so that wasn't much help either. The diff itself had some numbers engraved on it, but none that looked like a Part#. I don't have access to it atm though, so can't check.

The dealer did say it was for a 2007 US Spec car, and my car is a MY09 2008. So based on your info on the differences between 07 and 08 versions, that now makes sense.

I was making zero progress on the reverse searches...
Then I just googled the my07 p/n and that lib club thread popped up.

Maybe the member who posted that learned from bitter experience?
Pm me your vin and I'll ask the parts guy at Makin&luby.

Is the my07 c-diff FS?

Yeah maybe they ended up with a wrong part as well.

I've emailed Adam at Tuspeed yesterday, no reply yet. They're usually brilliant, so I certainly expect to get my money back. But if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to sell it. They'd get a centre diff within a few days (once I'm back home), instead of waiting for 8 weeks for one from Japan. I'd even do free postage within Aus.

Uh oh, hit 200k a few months ago, throwout bearing has started to whine when the transmission is cold, and the clutch pedal is depressed. No idea if this is a 230 or 240mm, so what do I tell my mechanic?? Other option is take it to a clutch place somewhere and let them deal, but that would cost more. Any recommendations in Wollongong are welcome.

Cheers.

Yeah, no way of telling what size it is until they take it out. Before I decided to get a Jim Berry clutch, my mechanic just suggested to choose a branch of clutch you're after (eg Exedy) and make sure the local supplier has both sizes in stock. Although, with the poor quality of Exedys recently, maybe stay with stock if you're happy with a subaru one. In that case, get your mechanic to contact subaru and make sure they have both sizes available.

A parts search or quotye from a Subaru dealer or parts supplier using your VIN should suffice.

If youre not replacing the flywheel I wonder if it would even be an issue.

I'm just researching if the confusion over 230/240mm flywheels is related to the c-diff change for MY08.

Getting deep into it.
The flywheel info is part of the engine, not transmission info.
6 pages of them with auto and manual on each page...
Also Tom's VIN refuses to be decoded :(
I'm trying to find out the specific vehicle type, eg my MY07 postFL was built 07/2006 andf is a BP9-KFH type.

Dont worry, its not the first time I've failed to include links so here we go:

6mt gtb:
http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/e ... 94/engine/

-MY07:
http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/e ... tration_1/
http://opposedforces.com/parts/info/12310AA340/
Note the OF useage info differs with what I've googled:
12310AA370 aka 12310AA340 & 800610740X8 Legacy 2007 Clutch, Flywheel FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLY FOR 2007 LEGACY XT TURBO 2.55 6M/T
12310AA370 aka 12310AA340 & 800610740X8 Outback 2007 Clutch, Flywheel FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLY FOR 2007 LEGACY OUTBACK XT TURBO 2.55 6M/T
12310AA340 Impreza STI 2004-2011 Clutch, Flywheel FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLY FOR 2004-2011 IMPREZA STI 2.57

MY08+:
http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/e ... tration_2/
http://opposedforces.com/parts/info/12310AA380/
12310AA380 Legacy 2008-2009 Clutch, Flywheel FLYWHEEL ASSEMBLY FOR 2008-2009 LEGACY SPEC-B 6-SPEED ONLY

So yes we can assume that the 08+ 12310AA380 flywheel is related to the 38913AA200 c-diff.
As for clutch types, I'll cross reference that info, now.
Here's a handy primer: http://www.rjes.com/html/clutch_types.html
