Hey guys yet another question haha

i had my exhaust fitted yesterday and i was advised to get a heat blanket for the turbo?? What are the pros of having one and the cons of not having one??

what would be better for the daily driver/ weekend warrior driver?? either a shield or blanket or maybe even something else??

and also what are some good brands to look at??

this will be going on a stock turbo for the 08 Liberty MT

Shields are better for longevity.

Heat wrap and turbo blankets dry up and get all crumbly after a few years. Also they cause more wear in the turbo and catalytic converters as less heat escapes, raising exhaust temps.

Blankets and heat wrapping lower engine bay temps and help reduce heat soak in the TMIC. They prevent rubber components from wearing prematurely (ie gearbox mount) as less heat is transferred to them, assuming the exhaust is wrapped near the component.

Containing heat throughout the turbo is the single most efficient thing you can do, after turning the ignition on, to make a turbo work.

Beanie is good.

But its a stock turbo and stock bla bla bla, why bother? Subaru made it to last a million KM without needing a backyard beanie or shielding fix

The pros of having on is there is less heat in your engine bay, which is a performance benefit because the intercooler is right above the turbo.
Also, there are lots of electrical and mechanical components that don't like lots of heat that could eventually be damaged from excess heat.

turbo blankets also keep heat in the turbo, increasing flow for better spool.

You can use your stock shield on the after market exhaust with a little modification. That's the cheapest option.

There is an spt shield that is easy to find.
Cusco used to do one but from my investigations they don't make the liberty one anymore.

Watch out for heat shields made for us cars that don't fit right hand drive like grimmspeed.

A lot of aftermarket turbo blankets won't fit because of the stock turbos waste gate actuator.
You have to get one hat has a cutout for the actuator. There are some around aimed at vf series turbos that would fit.

I'm assuming they had to take your stock one off? I've got this installed. Bolts up perfectly fine.

Yes they had to remove it to install the new 3" exhaust

With your car have you got an aftermarket exhaust or??

Just got a PHAT GT dump pipe. The standard heat shield won't fit with the bigger dump pipe unless you cut it. This heat shield fits the standard turbo and larger ones too.

I imagine that for most dump pipes this would work if ou don't mind cutting it.

Does the SPT Subaru parts one come with everything to install it??

I got mine second hand, maybe ask sbv to be sure. But it had all the bolts and required spacers when he gave it to me (I'd assume they came with the shield) so it was as simple as putting in a couple of bolts.

Its a bit different to the one in the link above (which wont fit) and includes all bolts etc and even a free spt sticker! Postage will be the killer, but if you find an spt dealer on ebay you may be able to get it a tad cheaper.

Just trim your factory heat shield mate.

Its easy and only has to be trimmed a little bit on the rear side might save you some $$$$.

I only think a blanket is worth it for a much bigger and better performing turbo
