Motor Problems

Hi All,

Went out for a drive in the car yesterday after getting it serviced as one does on a nice after noon, anyway put the boot into it getting onto the highway and the motor made a bad crunchy noise when i backed off.
At first the noise was only there when i backed off but when getting the car home it got worse and worse and now the motor just sounds like a dinner spoon in a milo can... we dropped the 5 -30 oil we just put in it that morning and there are no bits of metal in the oil.
Put new oil in it and let the motor cool overnight, this morning the motor sounds even worse.

Basically my Mate who works for Subaru thinks i have cracked a piston in the motor and is going to pull the motor out of the car and have a look at it for me.

Wondering if anyone has any advice or has had something similar? im not exactly sure what im going to do about it, do i rebuild the motor with stock internals?.. or do a put upgraded pistons in it ready for the VF52 and the other go fast bits i bought off another member on here.

I'm so lost and pissed off atm =(

(Edit: i should state its an 2008 GT spec B auto and only just done its 87,500 Service)

I would recommend a rebuild with forged internals, it would prolly be cheaper than a rebuild with genuine parts. Also, be sure to get a quote from a subaru expert, not a service centre.

Yea i'm waiting to talk to Peter at Subaru on Tuesday, he built the motor in my 98 WRX for me a few years ago and also builds a few cars for Subaru Rally Aus and my mate has worked with him for a few years now so i'm hoping they can sort me out with something or at least some options.

If the news is bad this might save you some coin.

If your car has a reasonable Subaru service history you might try calling them and negotiating a deal to get it sorted.

Yea my mate said the same thing too as it was under 100k kms, unforgivably the Car does not have Subaru service history =( as i bought if off a guy who had it as a company car he didn't car were he got it serviced, we found the Trans oil had not been changed at 50k and same with the Diff oils and the Air box had a non turbo air filter in it and it was about f*cked.

Thanks for the heads up on that STi gear, ill shoot it to my mate if we find its really bad.

Far out that is quite a loud tick! Could be something simple or something fatal you just never know sometimes.. Let us know what Subaru reckons!

The very loud knocking near the end of the Video, My Mate who is a Subaru tech is very much leaning towards it being bottom end being f*cked :S

Some of the other videos on youtube that came up referred to power steering pump failure.
Subaru replaced mine at 125K (for the previous owner).

Oooohhh yeh man that sounds like a big end bearing. My B4 did the same thing, so i fully forged and stroked it (2.0 -> 2.2).

Fun times ahead. While its out forge it, dont replace with standard shit.

If it was are damaged piston, you would have seen a lot more white smoke (burring oil).

But the metal fragments in your oil point to a spun big end bearing, just as Justin pointed out.

I was in your position a few months back, need any contacts to source parts, flick me a PM.
