Oil Leak

Postby GT25 » Fri Sep 07, 2007 10:29 pm

Heya all.

Took the superwagon on a run to the snow last week.

Part way through the weekend noticed a wisp of smoke from under the bonnet when we stopped. Couldn't work out where it was coming from.

Got a little worse over the weekend and then a lot worse on the way home - we lost most of the engine oil between Canberra and Sydney.

Turns out to have been a cracked oil feed to the variable valve timing.

Fixed under warranty but a little disappointing.

Just a faulty part from what they're saying - cracked pipe.

Without pulling the cover off the top of the motor it's a nightmare to see what's going on down there anyway.

Car's done 16000 ks, so it's not that old.

Hey Greg, i just got back from holidays & pulled the car up in the driveway after a 9 hour journey & noticed a hint of burning oil smell which concerned me but couldnt find any probs upon inspection.
After bout 3hrs went for a drive & noticed a little smoke seeping out from under the bonnet so i went straight home & whipped the torch out to find oil dripping onto the exhaust, i couldnt spot where it ws coming from though.

The cars only got 12,000kms under its belt.

The leak was on the turbo side of the motor & seemed to be from towards the front of the block, is this the same as yours???

The cars sitting in the driveway until monday when i can take it to the dealer.
Cheers,

Rosso.

oil seems to be the topic of conversation these days...

maybe my nose is out and i didnt see the white smoke, hence why im waiting for my new engine..

something for everyone to be aware of i guess.. even the loan car i have while im waiting chews the oil.. i looked out of paranoia today and it was well below the L mark, so i put some in it..

last thing i need is another engine seizing up on me..

hope its nothing major anyway..

and rosso, same with you mate, hopefully a quick fix that will keep that beautiful car on the road..

and good to see you made it home ok :)

Its seems to be a very small leak i just cant see where from. :?
Cheers,

Rosso.

I'd call that a VERY big coincidence.

I'd be letting SA know about this and asking if there's a fault that needs a re-call.

Got the bad news back today guys, they found a hairline crack in one of the oil feed lines (im not exactly sure which one) but the replacement part is Ex Japan so that means 4-6 weeks without my car

I dont know if its the same pipe as yours Greg, how long did it take em to fix yours?

At least i got a loan car for the time being, i pick it up after work today, probably a camry or equivilent. :x
Cheers,

Rosso.

Nah its even better, a Hyudai Elantra!!! Auto!!!

I would have preferred a camry rather than that POS.

Couldnt be arsed Complaining bout loan car, its not the dealership supplying it its subaru oz & theyre doing it through hertz rentals, there aint that many nice cars at our hertz here in mount isa.

Im just happy they got me a loan car.

I was told it was a faulty weld.

Once they get it off the car & send it to SA im sure theyll put it under the microscope, ill try to get them to tell me what they find, dunno if theyll do that.
Cheers,

Rosso.

hey Rosso.

All sounds very similar.

Started as a slight puff of smoke when stopped - on the Friday arvo. Much the same on Saturday. Couldn't find where the leak was coz there's dress panels over the top and bottom of the thing. no obvious change in fluid levels - we actually thought it might be a Power Steering leak.

A bit worse on Sunday morning but oil levels still not noticeably different. Then deteriorated quickly from Canberra to Sydney.

Leak was on the driver's side of the motor. They originally said it as the oil feed to the turbo, then on the service docs they said oil feed to the variable valve timing.

Either way a failure in something minor had the possibility of seizing the whole motor.

Shame it's gonna take so long to get the part matey. Suppose they only carry a small number of whatever part it is. Should airfreight some new ones in.

Looks like I am the latest candidate for this one.

Went to drop a friend off in North Sydney this morning and she asked about the smoke coming out of the scoop?

After a quick look, sure enough there was smoke wafting out of the scoop and out of the drivers wheel.

Got home, pulled the plastic cover off and found a torch. There appears to be oil (more than a couple of drips but not a flood) on the exhaust manifold. Thus, the smoke is being generated. I checked the oil just after switching the car off, and it had oil. I'll wait until it cools down and then check again.

Looks like a visit to Subaru on Monday morning. Given the previous reported problems, it looks like this might be the same oil feed line. Car has done about 26,000 and is just over 12 months old.
