DP's Cats and O2 Sensors

So after much use of the search function I found a lot of information regarding my questions on these 3 things yet still didnt come up with a straight answer. I may have (as my gf would say) had a "boys" look through the mountains of threads but basically here's my issue.

After a month or so with my new 07 lib sti wagon I'm thinking along the path of some exhaust mods. My local exhaust place is mettams mufflers in morley (perth members might know it?) ive gone there for my exhaust needs since my first car and have had everything from muffler tips to full extractors and custom piping done by them and they do great work. So I went to ask about a DP and centre pipe (still undecided about mufflers) and they offered me a stainless DP custom made for WRX with no cat(all fitted for $600). They said that they will be able to fabricate me something like that to fit up to the turbo then give me a hi flow cat and larger centre pipe. Yet after looking at the pretty pics of phat's DP i see there is a cat included.

This is where I got a little confused are there two cats in the lib sti exhaust? one in the dump and one at the start of the centre pipe? Am I able to just use one? and if I should choose to use one will this cause me a world of 02 sensor problems?

Any help would be great :)

Hey Jacob, the Libertys do have 2 cats, but 1 cat should be adequate. I've been running Phat's DP for over 2 years now without issue. The issue isn't how many cats to run, but whether the cells are dense enough to meet regulations. Phat selected a single high flow cat that would meet ADR requirements (others would either have no cat or use a cat that doesn't have enough cells).

I've seen some of the so-called custom made DP's and they tend to mangle the opening (flange that connects to the turbo). It will still work better than the factory dump pipe, but won't be as efficient. I'd recommend getting the Phat DP if you can. Not only because it's been designed specifically for the Liberty, but is ceramic coated as well.

Thanks a lot for the info! So my next question is, are the o2 sensors fussy about what cat is left whether it be the DP or the centre pipe one? It seems the phat DP is the way to go, im not sure how much he charges for them but postage will suck to get it to WA regardless. If you're suggesting the custom DP wont operate as efficiently as the phat DP it may be best to make the clever choice rather than the simple and most convenient. Thanks again!

The shipping to WA is surprisingly moderate, since it's via ground transport. Just check with one of the many WA folks who have ordered a Phat DP already. The only thing that's painful about ordering from Phat is that it takes 5 days to arrive. I want it now! :lol:

Naw, as long as there's 1 prior to the O2 sensor it's all same same.

That's the ticket! :D The wait may be longer, but getting done right the first time around will save you a lot of headache later on. Many a times I've gone the cheap and quick route but ended up paying for it in the end. :D

Sweeeet! I'm sold then. It's gonna be like christmas when a shiny Phat DP shows up it will be worth the wait! Thanks heaps for the help and advice guys I really appreciate it, modding the turbo liberty is a bit of a steeper learning curve compared to modding my NA Magna, first day on boost just about put 4 years worth of modding to shame :lol:

I just got my Phat DP fitted and a tune at All Star Garage (Perth) and there is a huge difference. The car runs much smoother, with none of the stuttering from the factory tune.

Highly recommended!

Cheers guys I'll contact phat once I have some more of my other parts ready,I still gotta pay for the bumper to be repainted and splitter to be fixed since the previous owner didnt know what kerbs were! Not to mention the rims :angry2: I'm building a collection in the workshed of parts ready to go on over a weekend then it will be the exhaust put on (might have a crack at it myself) then to allstar for a tune.
