Well I have sold my car and looking for a GTb-spec.
Normally I would only buy manual and now asking your opinion.
Ie, power, service price or anything that comes to mind. I have heard that MY08 has a 6speed auto. So there would be a difference there is that something to look out for?

Over all I just want to know are they comparable. I do enjoy driving manuals and mainly asking because I see some good prices on some autos with sat nav at the moment.

I have been looking for some time on carsales I have just been waiting for the right one, there are many that are auto though.. Hence my thread.

i ALSO THOUGHT ABOUT AUTO VS MANUel when I was in the market....You need to drive an auto and see how well(if) it changes at the places you like it to. Or if you are happy to make it change where you like it to happen. Autos that cant get near my desired change points have driven me nuts in the past, so thats why i went with the 6mt in the gtb. Mostly they seem to hang onto high gears far too long in the interests of economy, even in sport mode. I havent had any issues with working the gears in traffic so far, but some people do.
I have an 83 porsche 928(4.7L, 3 speed AT ex MB) and despite only being a 3spd, since its been valved for a revvy engine, it does a terrific job - will run to red line with kick down engaged- and yet with light throttle does very smooth changes, and I have a kickdown bypass that allows me to trick it down a gear at medium throttle.

Why would you buy an Auto.

Manual is much more enjoyable to drive. In 'Intelligent mode' it is very easy and smooth to drive, plus the torque means
you don't have to be constantly changing gears.
From what i understand the auto loses a lot of power to the wheels, i'm not to sure though.

Took me ages to find a manual, especially a wagon but it was worth it in the end. In regards to the Sat Nav, do you really need it, or just wanna be able to say that you have it?

Ahhhh, the age old debate... Auto vs. Manual.

If your wanting to get the best performance & control, then go for the manual. The manual in the face-lifted Gen 4's is also an STI (I'm pretty sure) so it's actually a cracking box. If you're wanting to mod & get wrapped up in the numbers, manuals also have less drivetrain / transmission power lost.

Obviously the auto has it's place & it's a great thing if it's also your daily drive (Or in my case, the Mrs can't drive manual). With having the tiptronic style box you do get more control (Still doesn't compare to a manual), so I guess you could say it's almost like having the best of both worlds.

Didnt the facelift models get paddle shift on the autos aswell? Ive seen some facelift 3.0R'Bs with paddles. Expensive option? Standard?

Integrated sat nav is really handy. Really really handy.

Facelift got paddle shifts, pre-facelift got button shift (+ and - buttons on the steering wheel).

We had two autos before our 6MT spec B and I can confidently say we'll be going back to auto next time.. and that's with the 'awesome' STI 6 speed manual box that we chased when we were looking..

OBVIOUSLY IT COMES DOWN TO PREFERENCE BUT, imo, a good auto with tiptronic = win

Haha that got heated, your right though I'll try a test drive. I was leaning towards manual anyway that why it made it more concrete.

I always thought I was going to get a manual liberty but the only decent ones on sale when I was shopping around were all Auto. I ended up with an auto 07 GT-B sti and can say that it is awesome to drive and honestly don’t mind it being auto. It’s true that the tiptronic mode isn’t a substitute for manual but it’s still pretty good when you want to have a play.

End of the day it comes down to preference so as suggested go test drive an auto and manual but try to take into account the fact that the test drive only lasts for a short time, if you choose one or the other you are stuck with that decision until you change cars (or convert the transmission lol).

I guess buying a used manual also means there’s a chance they could have been a shit driver and hurt the poor clutch and gearbox

People always have a long list of features that the manual has over the auto , but if you're really keen, there are a lot of little mods and tweaks you can do to compensate for that. Sure you still won't get the full features of the manual, but you can get the best of both worlds. However as everyone is suggesting, at the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference.

Wanna share with me some of those little mods and tweaks Arith?
