0-100 --> 07 Liberty GT-B TB STI

Postby Rome_BRZ » Thu Apr 14, 2011 10:30 pm

Ok so when I was looking at my current car I had read up about it and one of the things I noticed was that Subaru claimed that the 2007 Liberty GT-B Tuned by STI's 2.5 litre turbo could do 0-100km/hr in 6 seconds flat.

Well mine's the auto version and I didn't think it would quite hit what Subaru claimed, and tonight was the first real time I tested it out. There's a stretch of road near my place which has a 100km/hr speed limit so I thought best place to test it was there as I don't speed normally, don't want to lose my licence as I can't drive my baby!! So it's completely dead on this stretch of road, I figure it's safe enough to come to a complete stop.

I brought a velcro strap and strapped my phone to my steering wheel with the video mode recording facing the speedo (this was all before I started driving). The road was pretty much flat, so no uphill or downhill slope. I was at a complete stop, no brake boosting it was just let go of LFB, accelerator to the floor.

I got home and uploaded the video, tried to pinpoint the exact time I put my foot on the accelerator until the speedo hit 100.

I gotta say it's pretty much on the money, and for an auto I think that's pretty awesome! Allowing for a little deviation, its fair to say it was pretty much 6-6.1 seconds.

Not sure if anyone else has tested this but it was really interested so thought I'd share haha.

Imagine the grin I had when I walked through the door at home!

I'd find a more accurate way of testing; heaps of accelerometer apps you can get etc for smartphones. Also when your speedo says 100kph you aren't actually doing 100kph, more like 91 or so.

Yeh this is true, although when I've had my GPS in the car it's only really been off by 5kms or so when cruising at 100.

I'm happy enough knowing it is somewhere between 6 and 6.5 seconds. That's faster than anything I've ever owned before!

Hey Rome_sti did you find anything official from Subaru that says it does 6 secs flat?

I was also doing some research prior to my purchase, but I only came across figures from webwombat and mrt.
http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_reports/subaru-liberty-gt-tuned-by-sti-review.htm

Webwomat stated 5.9 (approx). 5.9 is better than 6

I even emailed Subaru for spec sheets, but they only sent across PDFs of their brochures, which didn't mention anything (if anyone is keen, I can upload these :) )

The GPS you refer to, is that a gps lap timer?

Hi Tonez,

No actually I didn't but from all the reviews I was reading they would always mention something along the lines of "subaru claimed 6 seconds flat".

I would assume the manual would be faster to 100 to the auto, is this a silly assumption? I just always thought that an auto would be slower than a manual. Mine's auto so I wouldn't think it could get 5.9 seconds.

And no it's not a lap timer, so probably not the most accurate. I didn't intend this to be the be all and end all of tests it was just something to sate my curiosity.

Upon reflection though I'm kind of thinking I want to do an accurate test just to see!

PS I'd like to see the brochure if you wouldn't mind uploading it :)

I have had a v-box strapped to my car during some track testing, over 3 complete runs (both ways) the average was 6.05 seconds…..its an auto too

Are those stock numbers or post modded and tuned?

I have driven both an 08 manual and auto. Whilst not accurate clearly, by the seat of my pants I did not notice the speed difference.

Although it has been claimed the auto is slower (and no doubt is) I am interested to see some testing??

Anyone with a bog stock manual and an iPhone want to test against Rome's time/footage.

BTW- interesting and valid point about the speedo reading lower. No doubt 0-100 is in fact 0-106 by the dash.

I think it's better to just agree that auto and manual are very similar in 0-100.
If you try and test the times between a manual and an auto like what you suggested, the driver has changed, making the results useless.
Your experience of driving both auto and manual is going to be a better indicator than two different people using iphone apps.

That's true, doing it in manual brings in human error...

I have an iPhone, is the app that you can use for it accurate? If so what's the app and I'll test it tonight or tomorrow night?

It's just a general indicator, if you wanted accurate you would need the correct tools and under scientific conditions or whatever.
Are you factoring in temperature of the oil, pressure or ambient temperature for each test you do?
Those are just a few of the probably hundreds of variables.

Iphone apps are like I said a general indicator and can never be accurate enough to be cited as performance figures.

+1

Subaru probably did over 20 runs, each by one or more professional drivers, and posted the fastest run (or they could what Ferrari does and tune their cars prior to the test and claim it was 'stock' numbers). I just find it interesting that their specs show the auto is a whole 1 second slower than the manual. I know the auto loses about 10-15 kw from the torque converter but if it's a whole 1 second, it's a poor auto box they're using.
