Just an observation but the Delvac actual seems to flow more freely and feel thinner in my fingers at room temperature than my Nulon 5w40.

Also, just wondering if the detergent packs offer more resistance to sludge build up long term or even clear clogged oil galleries to ultimately offer better oil delivery anyway?

I'm using the Delvac going forwards. Mick at MSR rebuilds engines daily and if he says its good, it's good.

Ultimately your choice Bruce but was just giving my opinion

Indeed sometimes things don't make sense but they work

Sludge buildup is relative to age of the motor etc too. Like I said I think the delvac is good, just not for my motor

All good Mick. :D

I was surprised too as I was expecting a lot thicker being a 15w oil but it was relatively thin. With cold pouring point being similar to most 5w oils.

I'm not convinced of that being a sufficient test of weight though Bruce - I may be mistaken but from my limited knowledge on oil I don't see how a 15w oil can be thinner than a 5w oil at the same temp and same conditions all else being equal. Do you know if Michael has an explanation for this phenomena?

It's also quite an ambiguous test to use for oil weight testing -

Plus oil is a carcinogenic you shouldn't be touching that shit

Agreed, but I like to live dangerously..

Was too curious as I poured it I thought it looked quite thin so wanted to check.

Just an observation, no scientific testing done.

Delvac is also available in 10w40.
That weight is a good compromise for a used stock engine.
It's oil with a high detergent level appropriate for shorter OCI's.
The info is out there, whether or not its for you is your decision.
It clearly doesn't not work, and inexpensive fresh oil is a good thing too. :D

The 10w40 has been advised against unequivocally by many auto enthusiasts / specialists due to the incompatbile high detergent nature not suitable for petrol based cars

Re: Oil Recommendation

Now i have time to post, on a computer, not a phone ;)
read everything here, and it seems people are using delvac based off of one mechanics opinion, of course he knows his stuff, but as stated its opinion, and the proof behind it, and the science are both missing in action.

I have had a variety of engines over the years, stock, built, race engines etc etc etc.

I have tried a bloody lot of oils.

For stock engines i think whatever the service manual suggests is correct, believe it or not, those guys at subaru really know there stuff.

I have used diesel oils in my subaru engines before, but i do not reccomend it for long term use, diesel engine oils have far more detergents, and are great for cleaning oil the galleries etc every now and then for engines with sludge build up, but when used all the time those detergents then break down and distribute the scum/sluge back through the engine. Oil oil filters simply do not clean 100% all the time.
I have run diesel engine oil long term on one engine(ej20g sti ra motor) it ended up doing a head gasket(my fault) but when i stripped it down the bores were glazed.
There are a few ways a bore gets glazed, and it is more common just after an engine is built, so i can see why msr reccomends delvac, its a descent running in oil as its higher rating "15" and it has friction modifiers.

I think for an unopened stock motor 5-30 is the go, its thin, and protects you at start up when you absolutely need it the most, and runs well at temps, and doesnt break down easily.

My last built engine ej207 with forgies i ran magnatec diesel 15-40 until it was run in, then went back to Fuchs Titan SuperSyn 5-30 that engine was running 22psi all day every day, street and track, and is still going strong with its new owner.

All of the above is my opinion(we all have em i know), the absolute best thing anyone can do is their own research, not just take someone's word for it.

2 identical engines will always have different wear/oil consumption/life outcomes

Excellent feedback Dan

However one thing ill qualify is that the 5w30 oil may be great for a stock motor : slightly modified, but it won't be good for the following:

-sustained high temp driving (track)
- ethanol based fuels (dilution, as by the time you have done 5000kms your oil will be closer to a 20 Sae rating. The esters would also have broken down and thus suspension qualities of the oil would have disappeared.
- older/ looser clearanced motors which will just burn straight through that chit
- built motors

Also, the reason for delvac being great running in oil (I suggested that many pages back too) is due to its suspension and weight, which both allow the rings to seat properly without scoring the block

I agree with you 100% on pretty much everything you say.
let me qualify the track thing on my last built engine. That was just marulan, a 1km tight little track, max 10 laps at a time, it was not a stress on the engine or car(but fun power oversteer track)

If your going to real tracks then a weigh change is most definately reccomended.

That engine never used a measurable amount of oil on changes, but it did run an external oil cooler, and i had guages for everything so i could keep an eye on stuff.

I love Fuchs, only though using it, but pretty much every big name has a quality product or 10 in their lineup.

So the moral of the thread:

pick an oil

use it for 5000km

test it.

Anyone know of Sydney based tester???

I'm happy for big hitters in the Subaru game like MSR and Phil Lowe, who rebuild engines day in day out, to do the research and share. And I'm happy to accept their advice based on experience. :)

Having worked in cylinder head reconditioning, as an apprentice auto machinist, it easy to see how a high detergent pack oil that keep modern engines with their narrow oil galleries free from sludge buildup as being beneficial.

Both MSR and Phil Lowe both agree on shorter oil change intervals using the Delvac product.

I change my oil every 5000kms so it suits me fine. If I was going by the factory 12,000kms service interval I'd not be using it.

I''m still researching the subject as a "path of least resistance" to fixing my cars AVCS issue (the ultimate fix being replacement).

It appears Delvac would be even safer than eg Wynns (detergent based) oil flush.

So if using eg Delvac or any other higher detergent oil as a temporary de-sludge/flush oil change, would the lighter or heavier weight be more beneficial???
