I would be guessing the white crud on your hood lining would be some sort of residue from cleaning by the dealer or some spray on wax etc.
The engine bay does get fairly hot (your car like mine is black). When I go to wash the car I have to be carefull around the scoop cos the heat rising up through the intercooler then out the scoop dries the water/carwash pretty quick (matter of seconds) if the car had been driven say more than around the block

I confirm my O8 tuned by STi wagon does not have a build number inside the car. I bought mine brand new this year in Feb, still only just reached 5,300km :D Only build number is on my engine cover. I have STI stitched into the seats, and a little pink emblem in the top half of my speedo, ontop of my gear knob (manual) and tuned by STi sill plates. Enkeis with STi centre caps which when you pull them out are actually 3 dimensional under the clear coating, not a sticker with a heap of gloss over it. Each of the exhaust 4 tips have STI stamped on top. The control link arms are black with STI emblem painted white on em (look under car from rear) And black brembos vs gold nuggets on the 07's And as you also pointed out get pink STi springs ontop of the bilsteins which normal SPec Bs dont. front tower brace has little sti logo on right hand side as you look in engine bay. And nobody mentioned the front Lip spoiler with STi badge on it

I havent checked since my last service they havent nicked my engine cover and put a standard one on it... only reason they might do it is to do some cosmetic mods to another car then try sell it as a limited edition to make more money off an unsuspecting doofus. My dealer doesnt seem as shonky as some i read about over east, so id be extremely surprised if my cover was missing.

Good luck but i dunno what solution they can offer regarding missing build number. They havent unstuck it then glued it onto the likes of your radiator support rail like HSV's which is better so if owners do engine mods and if they cant refit cover they still have their badges?

I'm voting a victim of a oil fed under bonnet fire (most likely due to turbo oil line fire).

White stuff will most likely be retardant residue and they lost the engine cover, etc in the fire. Could also quite easily replace the bonnet as part of it as well.

Did you say it overheated after 2hrs of driving? That's just not a Subaru, the car has issues. The temp needle should hit horizontal and stay there. But it will get hot in the engine bay.

Check your oils, water, coolant, etc while the car's cold to make sure it's all good. Also, get the VIN checked and FULL history from Subaru. They'll konw if it's been rebuilt or not under warranty.

Out of curiosity, I was told the 08 STi exhaust is different to the 07 one... could anyone who has an 08 TbSTi please take photos of their exhaust tips? :)

Um I think 07's were just straight cut pipes, where the 08's are rolled tips. Wagons have longer tips than sedans I'm told.

08 have straight cut exhaust tips. Am positive the 07 & 08 part Nos are the same.

08 tb STi's also have a Second Stage of Manufacture build plate in the spare wheel well.

Don't look very straight cut to me??? Sorry if your referring to the angle they are cut on.... they do have a bit of an angle top to bottom though. I was meaning 07's Just had single wall pipes rather than the rolled tips on the 08'sImage

Hi Tangcla, I can confirm (though I dont have a photo, one was posted previous) that the 08 STi Exhaust Tips are 'rolled'.

-CPITTS: Sorry, I may not have been clear before. When I said 'heat' I only refer to that which emanates from the engine bay. I considered this quite high, but of course I this is my first turbo and first Subaru so I may not be used to this if it is the norm. The engine oil temp (gauge) is always near the middle, never above. Mostly hovering just below.

What you said was interesting though, would Subaru be able to provide a full history of the vehicle, if so, what exactly should I ask for? Or is it better I just get a mechanic to check when I hand it in for a service soon?

I did speak with Subaru who said that this was being looked at and they will get back to me, that was a week ago. Will contact them again tomorrow to follow up. The Dealer, well he never got back to me regarding my question. Guess I cannot really blame him, he is a salesman and therefore post sale support is not really in his best interest.

Latest thing concerning me is the ludicrous amount of brake dust build up. These wheels dont stay clean longer than 2 days! I suspect cheap pads been used?

p.s - Just checked the spare wheel, all I could find was a pink sticker with an inspection stamp done by some japanese named dude (lol) and it had the number 100 there. That could just be the inspectors number or inspection point number?

Or am I 100?

It is a full size Enkei STi badged wheel btw.

That's not oil temp - it's coolant temperature

OOPS!!! Major Cock-up!!!

I finally got off my ass and went up in the roof and checked the old mufflers.
Yep, they are rolled tips. A thousand apologies.

I will now go and drown myself in Dr Bundaberg's famous elixir of good life. Enjoy? I certainly will!!!

PS. If the spare wheel response refers to my input, look in the spare wheel well.

Bye............glug..........glug

It's your car, go to Subaru service dept and have them look it up on the computer. If it has a Subie history, you're entitled to it.

Wash your rims spotless then do a cut/polish and polymer sealant on them. The dirt/dust will wash off (and stay off) much better and infinitely easier.
Pads need to use metal/material to stop. The dust is a result. There's no such thing as a good dust free pad for low temp daily driving. Yes there are dust free pads, but they won't work properly until they're hot and you don't want to put your foot on the brake for an emergency stop when they're cold, you just won't have the stopping power at all.
It's all trade-offs.

Looked in the spare wheel well and all that is there is a badge with the VIN. No STi Tuned details, anyone able to post a photo of there spare wheel well that shows the STi build number?
