So i gave it a few squirts after dropping the kids off to school. Got out and the bloody over flow fluid was bubbling!! CRAP!!

Had a quick look under the oil filler and there was the slightest of slight milkyness .

Im not getting any spike in temp tho.....

Ssssoooo i have a leak.... Just have to find it!!

NEVER thought these Libs would have dramas like this with their cooling systems!

You have the classic start of a head gasket issue. Get it checked and prepare for the worst, no matter what the result. :(

Whilst I had my Liberty the effort I went through to manage and tweak my tune to achieve a satisfactory result was insane.

It's one of the reasons I didn't want to own it any longer.

Whilst the tune was perfectly fine in the end, and I had no issues, the paranoia, the effort in monitoring, the extra gauges etc, was too much for a guy with a young family.

You almost have to become a tuner to save these cars from stuffing up was my conclusion.

so just cause you don't have temps rising doesn't mean your out of the woods....

good luck

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!!!

I dont want to hear that man....!!!

I only started having these issues after a tow bar from a commonwhore jumped into the front of my car and radiator ( ie i rear ended someone :) !!) which buckled the radiator.

Does a lifted head give odd issues ?? Like surging or anything!!

Oooohhh crap!!

This is NOT what i wanted to hear.!!

Im taking it down to a mechanic that i trust on Thursday. I have already spoken to him and he said that it may not be the head gasket and may just be a leak in a hose.!!

Soooo we shall see.

Come on guys, POSITIVE thoughts...... Dans car is ok.!!

I hope it's an easy and cheap fix Daniel. Sounds like a recent curse has been hitting these ones... Dropping mine off tomorrow, I'll be having a good chat to the mechanic and will report back in with whats going on. Funny thing is my reservoir went back down to normal levels today, although I didn't drive it for long it was looking ok. Reading some other forums and all around the intewebz talking about a design flaw in the Subaru head gaskets (probably already known by most here), definitely will be considering something like Cosworth/Cometic.

Here are some pics of my dirty ass overflow & bubbling :(

For the price, go with the Cosworth version. Make sure you grab the thinnest one they do (it's actually very slightly thicker than the stock head gasket) - their thicker ones are designed for reducing static compression ratios, and that's something you'd want to be doing as part of a fullly planned build, not just a stock replacement.

Whilst you're at it, I'd suggest you replace the head studs too with something better than the stock ones. Again Cosworth do some stuff here (they have two versions - unless you're planning on running 30psi, the cheaper version they do would be more than enough I suspect).

Cosworth 0.78 is the best choice, considering the heads will be serviced and skimmed to ensure a flat surface.

The Cosy head gasket has a thicker metallic seat which provides are better seal where it’s needed.

Dan

Sorry to be frank, but be realistic, no burst hoses will expose oil to coolant…… the only area where oil and coolant can come into contact is the heads if the gasket is damaged.

Any milky residue is the result of oil emulsifying with the coolant or vice versa.

$3-4k would cover the fix which would include serviced, gasket kit, head studs, timing belt, water pump, pulley and thermostat.

Cosworth parts are overpriced rubbish except for their headgaskets

Just grab a set of arp 2000 head studs if you're not planning on running more than 20psi of boost

The first thing I would check once the engine is back together and BEFORE you drive it - is the tune.

Figure out why its done a headgasket first before exposing your reconditioned engine back to the original tune which is of unknown quality.

Oh god you've scared me now, I've had mine back since Friday and have been logging since (I havn't seen anything odd, but I know very little), I think I will revert back to a stock tune tonight and start getting kido to whip something up :D (Hopefully before any damage is done, although I suspect mine did it due to a heat issue..).

Now that there have been a few cases of HGs going, does this seem to be only occurring a lot in the factory fitted HGs?
