Oh, so no point in trying or still worth a try just in case?

If not hydraulic lifters then how are they actioned?

Hydraulic Lifters are there to automatically adjust the the clearance between the cam follower and the cam
so basically keeping the cam and lifter touching each other with the correct force/ distance
the newer motors use solid lifters (buckets) with or without shims

Sometimes the shims may need replacing due to wear of the cam/ shim/ bucket/ valve/ valve seat, etc and they get noisy and rattle a bit.
worst case is a shim comes out from between the bucket and cam/ valve and it bounces around in the head, jams a valve or cam and you get damage to the valve/ piston or it skips teeth on the
timing belt and the pistons mince your valves and heads.

Thanks for the description. That's good to know how this works. It starts to sound nasty at the extremes of where it can go...so hopefully not the case for my engine.

So is that a definitive "additive is a pointless exercise!"?
Started with a Gen2 Outback, then got a MY07 GT Spec.B Manual w Cat Back Exhaust and Verso Tuned, now got 2 kids and a MY07 GT Auto Wagon, Ultrex stealth back exhaust, panel filter, Whiteline Sways all round, Spec.b struts and springs and Kido-Tuned.

additive would be pointless if its top end noise and not a lifter, if its bottom end it may fill the gaps so to speak..

i wouldnt put anything in till a mechanic can give you an exact diagnosis

Good point.

I will do so once I've finished with the tuners diagnosis as he is trying some ideas to see if the mystery low load/low rpm knock can be tuned out.

I have been trying to get to the bottom of a false knocking problem which you may have noticed through several posts around the place. Not sure if it's a faulty sensor or an engine that is fubar'd. It's only done 40k and isn't driven that hard (normally). Regularly serviced, etc. Also note that under rev's it's fine (no pinging and no thumping...just faster ticking).

Anyway just wanted to compare my engine sound with others. I have posted a link below to a short snippet of a warm start. There's lots of ticking but I've been told this is standard Subaru boxer noise. Note that I put the camera-phone inside the engine bay for a clearer sound...so it is definitely louder on the video than when you stand back from the car. You'll notice as I pan across the engine it's not as loud as when the microphone is 15cm away from the block.

Any feedback appreciated.

You need a valve job and lifters.

I've been telling my wife that for months...
