Yeah that's pretty much what I said... Think I finally have it sorted though, looks like it’s a new EJ257 short engine from Subaru (will upgrade to forged internals), my tuner has a set of heads (that have been ported and polished) that were off his 2006 WRX STi that he is willing to part with pretty damn cheaply.. So I should be back on the road with a couple of weeks with new forged bottom end and ported and polished STi heads..

well i know where a set of heads are if you get stuck. Make sure you get the pistons with the 2.8mm oil ring and if its an option coated - do it right. Oh and upgrade to the larger ARP headstuds. Same thread size just larger midsection so no machining required

Ah I forgot about the TMIC and turbo on 06 STi not matching up with 08 LIb.. What does this mean? I need to get a different turbo and TMIC?.. Which brand of piston should I be looking at? Most people recommend CP..

You just take the STI one off and get your manifold and put it on (after cleaning out any engine bits :P ) same hole location, its just that the STI one is hektik red and alloy and the throttle body location totally different. If you were going to use a FMIC you'd just use the STI one and alter the pipe work.
CP pistons are pretty common I use them. I had mine modified to suit the 2.8mm oil ring. If you didn't do this you'd use excessive amount of oil. From what I heard you can now option them with the 2.8mm ring just like the standard piston and also coated as well. Makes the whole thing quieter. don't expect it to be like a stock piston though

thats no good at all Adam...a moment silence is in order for another 2.5 dak dak boom...if you can wait four months I will sell you mine cheaply as mine is going to get a transplant. 45,0000 kms on the clock, well serviced and tuned, does not burn oil like its going out of style.

If you're getting an EJ257 short block from Subaru, why will you need aftermarket pistons? The STi block is already forged/semi-forged, I would be leaving it at that personally? (unless you really wanna go hardcore)

You should just need to bolt on the heads from your mechanic and then drop her straight in with your current manifold/turbo/etc on top and she should be good to go!(make sure you get her back on a dyno before running it in though!)

I wanted to increase boost to 18-20 PSI, will the STi block handle it?..

My tuner is organising the re-build, I left the car with him (also his STi heads), so he will re-tune before I head up to pick it up.

Four months!!! Its frustrating enough having to wait one month, I hope to have it back on the road with in two weeks.. Until then my gf's dad is letting me borrow his Ford GT (which she crashed the other day, no major damage, just need to replace the two passanger doors), 290kW but defiantly not as quick as the Liberty and about double the fuel to run it and auto, but its pretty comfortable to get around in..

What are you getting put in?

What is the difference? Noisier and uses more oil? How do they modify to suit the 2.8mm oil ring?

JDM EJ20 long, cosworth gear and nice twin scroll snail...8000 rpm limit and more fun that you can handle is the plan. My car is a lease for another three months then I will be buying it, selling my wifes VW GT and leasing a Merc SUV for us. The Lib will then get the transplant. I have seen enough 2.5 ltr dak dak boom to know I am wasting time and money trying to continue with it mod style. The new option is tried and tested with plenty in my neck of the woods. I have a budget for it but will still be looking to sell of the current engine and supporting mods.

PLENTY... But Dave is CASHED UP...

The 257 should easily handle 18-20psi... I say "should" because there are always exceptions to the rule, and there are a lot of variables!

I ran that same amount of boost through my standard EJ205 WRX motor with 90,000kms for over a year with no hiccups!... Just 300hp at all 4!

I would be as confident running that amount of boost through a 257 as I would through the same block with aftermarket Forgies! But thats me!

The cosworth 2.5 block on the other hand, not the same, but then we are talking about Dave $$s! :P

five figure budget here plus tuning, I'm currently running 1.1 bar (15.9 psi) and 1.2 bar (17.4 psi) peak boost with stock engine I think that's pretty close to as much as it can handle for any long term use.

way better performance even for daily driver imo...couple of people I know have this set up and its just breathtaking but can be daily driven just as easily. Imagine being able to rev out at 8000 and plus the benefits of the twin scroll...so much better and tougher imo.
