Resonatorectomy - Advice and stories needed please!

I gave cpitts a buzz today. He had a WRX too which he removed the resonator on, like i did.
He has tried the resonatorectamy on his Lib and found little to no difference in terms of
performance or intake noise. I am 'chasing the dragon' in terms of the benefits that were
had in my WRX Stevo. . . . i might pass as well.

To get the same noise as the WRX, I did this to the front half of my airbox:



The reso on the '07 GT-B is a big unit on the end of a small hole. Given it's on the external side of the air filter and that there's an IC and a turbo in the way, the whole 'tuned lenght' argument isn't really invalid as the air pulses coming back from the closing of the intake valves are going to have much bigger issues than harmonic resonance creating tubulence or air wave pulse cancellations.

The reso is PURELY for noise cancellation and from my driving around with it off for a couple of weeks, the noise is SO minor it's just not worth it.

Cut up the airbox like that THOUGH, and yay, it's back to the noise I liked with the old REX.

With the Silicon intake pipe it should sound pretty good under spool conditions.

If you have a look at the bottom of the airbox pic there, you'll see the small hole that the reso was connected to....... well, what's left of it.

Did either of you try this mod?

I did this a long time ago to the 3.0R and make for a nice induction noise during wide open throttle. Did this mod before the quad tip mufflers and it was quite noticable in the cabin. After the quad tip mod, I barely notice the induction noise although I am sure from outside the car both sounds combine to create the current effect from my vehicle.

You both would have heard it on the recent Reefton Run.

for all the guys that did the resonatorectomy and didn't find a performance difference, did you cover the hole to the resonator or just leave it open?

Also, I'm having trouble taking off the front of my airbox 'cause there's a support screw that's on really tight.

Just pulling off the reso, there was SFA difference.

Doing the big cut out of the side of the airbox, there's a significant difference! And a lot more induction whistle and noise.

Looking at your diagram seems that the side hole you have cut will cause air to bypass the panel filter in the airbox. Am I seeing your picture correctly? Maybe take a shot of all the airbox components at different stages of assembly so the "picture" is clear for dumb ass like me!

Nah, the piece of airbox that has the cut out of it is the front side (behind the headlight). The air filter goes along the seam where the front and back clip together. So the large cut out section is well in front of the filter and at a point goes right through the hole where the resonator would be plugged in.

I'd never bypass the air filter, that really is asking for issues. (I'm silly, but not dumb).

Yep, got it now. I was looking at your picture and thinking it was the rear section of the airbox (who's the dumb ass?).
