Well, repco was $800. And I could of bought the same kit (gates) from the yanks for $50 cheaper including freight!
But I thought I'd try Subaru before buying the yanks kit.I asked for their best price (i always do, i miss Indo) the parts bloke said if I could wait 3weeks he would get it sent in with the rest of the monthly order, saving me a bit.
$450 from Subaru which blew me away!

I've been on the email to someone apparently in the know (rather not name) who is sugesting Subaru only swap the timing belt at the 125k service. All the info i've found says it's the full timing belt kit.

Normally the complete kit is a bit of overkill on the first timing belt change (depending on the KMs), if you are around the 125,000km mark usually only the belt needs to be replaced. More often than not its only at the second belt change (approx 250,000km) that you’d need to change the tensioner/pulleys etc. That said, if you’ve bought the car second hand and you don’t know how well the previous owner has kept to the service schedule doing the whole kit can give you good peacce of mind.

Either way he's given me some good pricing that i might as well share.

Timing Belt Kit (includes belt, auto tensioner, idler pulleys, crankshaft seal) TBKIT006 - $430.00
    Water Pump 21111AA240 - $90.00
    Water Pump Gasket 21114AA051 - $2.43
    Thermostat and Gasket Assembly 21210AA030 - $53.55
    Timing Belt $175.00

Yeah the 125k service from subaru replaces the fuel filter and the timing belt, no idlers, tensioner etc. All up it was almost $1800 for mine. Thats with water pump, thermostat, tensioner and all idlers on top of the service. As Bruce mentioned, there is also another idler that is not included in the kit that needs to be purchased as well.
Subaru don't normally change the waterpump or thermostat either, but for piece of mind I did the whole shebang.

Why do the kit then? Are the tensioners or idlers known to fail? I understand doing the waterpump and thermostat. $1800 can suck a fattie :D

There's plenty of evidence the idlers and tensioner pulleys will get noisy or fail prior to the next timing belt service, and need to be replaced.

I guess it's spend the money whilst the front of the motor is being worked on and save the labour cost, or take your chances and wear the greater cost should there be issues midst timing belt services.

Also a wearing pulley will cause greater heat being transferred to the belt. This can also cause premature failure of the belt and then you'd probably wish it was done at that point.

A bit of a gamble all round. I'm not into gambling with this stuff so got them changed.

Is this for the timing belt service at Subaru?

The parts alone are worth more than that so I'd be interested to know exactly what's being done.
