+1 for Redline too. Have Redline Lightweight in both gearbox and diff for the last 50,000klm's and am very happy with the shift quality.

hey guys,

its nearly that time for the 50k service.. i had a look at motul gear 300 75W-90 and i am most probably going to use this in the diff and gearbox. does anyone know what the difference is between the motul gear 300 and motul gear 300 LS is?

also i think at the 50k service the brake fluid is due has anyone used the motul dot 5.1 brake fluid? i was recommended this by my mechanic..

please let me know thanks, Alex.

They are for plated diffs, which you don't have.

What brake fluid you use is far less important than how often you change it. All the top shelf ones are good dry and not so good wet.

Ok then thanks for the info on the gear oil..

What would you recommend for brake fluid? You do have to change it at the 50k service don't you?

I recommend you use any good fluid and change it frequently (at least every 12 months).

The Motul 5.1 is fine.

500ml if you are good and don't waste much during the flush. Buy 1L to be safe.

I now use Motul Gear 300 and LOVE it. Cold performance is brilliant, yet the high temp shear strength of this stuff is top notch.

Only downside is the cost.

My gearbox is identical to the one in your TbSTi, except yours has to deal with about 100kw less power.

Rear diff doesn't matter. It's a Suretrac diff, so any 75W90 (even the Motul if you're feeling wealthy) will do. It's a limited slip diff, but you do NOT want to use LS additives.

yo coyote,

dumb question (cos i've been off the forums for a long time) what power is your car making now?

when i had the car at making about 35% increase in power ATW, i found that with 300V in the box, shifting from 3rd to 4th, the syncros don't come together nicely. went back to the stock subie box oil. box works perfectly...

Yo Gerald,

Your question isn't dumb, in fact I often wonder myself. My car hasn't been near a dyno in ages, so I have no idea how much power it's making. Given it is stock, about 184kw I reckon

Although I've honestly never experienced it myself, I don't doubt your report on the synchro performance. The best lubricant can't give the best synchro performance, it's just not possible as the two requirements are almost completely opposed.

Perhaps you should try Neo? I drive like Miss Daisy and probably don't work my synchros as hard as others. The Gear 300 has the best shear specs bar none and I get zero synchro issues, so it's right for me. The Neo is noted to have friction additives for synchro performance, but is still up there for lubrication. If I had synchro issues, that's what I'd be using.

But if you're really using 300V in your gearbox, then that's your problem. 300V is engine oil

i'm sure you're right that it's the 300 gear or something.

i don't drive mine hard either, even when i'm just coasting and shifting like a little girl, still does it.

i did notice that it was more obvious when the box was warmed up.

184KW is the quoted figure from the sales brochure for a 2.5 LGT

the TB STi is quoted at 194KW

Haha tony was referring to at the wheels power not at the flywheel and referring to certain "happy" dynos :P

Nah, I meant about 184 at the flywheel.

From what I've seen, that's about 300kw atw on the Pulse dyno.

Gerald, did you buy your car new? It sounds like your synchros are worn.
