Find someone who has had their ecu tuned by a reputable tuner, go for a spin and see if it's worth spending the money. Nothing worse than spending money, then being dissapointed. (Like the people who have spent many $$$$ on tunes that they need re tuning by someone else later. Paintjobs are the same...)

Heh-heh. I was hoping that was my point in my earlier post. To do research by asking around who's had a tune, and asking what they thought. And, if possible, take a spin in their car.

For sure. Bu the thing is, it needs to be from people with the same motor, same model and no other mods. Otherwise the information may not be relevant...

Maybe also consider the distance between you and your tuner if re work is required.
For example my car was originally tuned by "Tuners name with-held"...I hit boost cut one morning about a week after it was done...back to the tuner.
All in all it went back 2 or 3 times for rework...till I found a better tuner.
Imagine if you got your car done interstate...who would work on it if a problem arose......maybe you could do a USB reflash....no bad idea.
I hope you get my point.

That's a great point John. I've always considered what happens to those people who were tuned by a visiting tuner from interstate. Where do you turn for support and service when you need it? Does the tuner give you a contact for someone local?

For example my car was originally tuned by "Tuners name with-held"...I hit boost cut one morning about a week after it was done...back to the tuner. All in all it went back 2 or 3 times for rework...till I found a better tuner.

Yikes! That must have been a terrible experience for you. It reminds me of my own experience with Autotech in Granville (tuner's name not withheld for shaming purposes). I thought I had done my research as this was a well known tuner who did a lot of WRX's, EVO's, etc. I asked them directly whether they've done Libertys. No problem they said. We've done tons.

Sure enough the tune yielded very disappointing numbers. The kw was practically stock level! However the tuner was very proud and thought he did a great job just getting me there. On the road it felt crap, and triggered the CEL several times. I called to complain but he said that's the best he could do and that was tough.

Luckily for me, Phat was doing some work on my car and found a loose air hose, which he plugged back in. That made things run a lot better. However if the tuner had any experience with a Gen IV Liberty, he would have gotten suspicious of the low kw results, and would have investigated on why it wasn't producing.

Best thing I ever did with mine was get it tuned - also the scariest (ej257 of fails).

I envy those who are geographically close to the Phat man.

With Stock Rods and stock pistons.
Sure we all tune for more power but delivery of said power and longevity of the motor can always be compromised....then the finger starts to get pointed....

Exactly.

My current tune actually nets me very little peak power, and with no increase in peak boost, but I now gain 10psi by 2200rpm and 13psi by 2500rpm. No mods on their own can provide that sort of low end :)
