Is the factory spec oil good enough for a tuned gtb ?

Msr is big on the delvac my mate has been running it after tuning at msr

What a thread I've created !!

LOL at newbies joke

But Newbie, you've kind of missed the point of the thread. As coyote+dr0t basically said - "Stop taking people's opinions. Pick an oil, run it, test it. Get FACTS about it from an oil testing LABORATORY. There are soooooo many oils out there, they'll all work. Some work better than others. For what you run - factory spec is FINE. Delvac is also fine. We're being really nit picky here and match the oil to a specific engine for specific fuel and specific application. This is really hard to do just by looking at specs and even harder by getting opinions. If you want to find the cream of the crop oil for your application and engine - test them!"

nuff said.

In other news - I'll try to test motul 10w40 for you guys, but I'm not sure that would reap plausible results on mine as I keep putting fresh stuff in.

Will definitely test delvac in the next couple of months.

OK, from the manual, it seems that Subaru recommend 5W30 as their preference, with 10W30 or 10W40 as an option if you plan on operating in hot environments (relevant in much of Australia, probably also relevant for trackwork given the temps that can build up).

I used to use Castrol Edge Sport 5W30 in the Bora, and was pretty happy with it (I changed it every 5,000km). I pick up my MY09 GT Spec.B today, one of the first thing's I'll do will be an oil change.

I don't believe Castrol Edge Sport is available any more, and I was considering Shell Helix Ultra 5W30 as a replacement. Does anyone have any empirical data on the Shell Helix product range? I tried to look at their data sheets online, but their website gives "permission denied" when you click the download links (and looking at spec sheets for oils in other markets isn't useful).

Interestingly, Mobil say they do a Delvac 1 ESP 5W40 (http://www.mobil.com/AP-English-LCW/hea ... -5w40.aspx), which I may consider as my first oil change just to ensure that if there's any gunk in the engine, I can get rid of it - I may even just run it for 1,000km or so.

And I'll be getting the oil tested to provide some data back to the community. :)

Let us know how you go with the Used Oil Analysis: where and cost.
I've kept samples of my last couple of changes...

You can't go wrong with one step up from the manufacturer's oil.

I'm using Penrite 5w40 HPR5. Does the job and still revs up pretty quick. Maybe 5w30 will feel quicker but I'm using 5w40 for that extra bit more protection all year round...

Evidence of used oil lol.
Mainly how the used oil coped with its job, for example I'd expect highish levels of silica in my last oil due to my HKS panel filter not being sealed.

There's plenty of "interesting" discussion and analysis on UOA's on bobistheoilguy if you need to know more.

HPR5 is actually 5w30. They put 40 on the bottle because of the additional zinc content

Really? Er.. should I try 5w40 valvoline synpower then?

Well I don't have any problems with the penrite anyway. Dip stick oil level is still pretty much full since an oil change 1500km ago. Maybe it has dropped 1mm?

Castrol Edge Titanium is what replaced it.

why did they put "(thickness)" after "viscosity"? they could have saved the time and just wrote 'thickness'...

Thickness is when its cold and viscosity is when it is heated?

they were explaining what viscosity means... alot of people do not know the meaning of viscosity and it is the more "proper" word to use...

and the viscosity of that particular oil will be the same no matter if its hot or cold... as im pretty sure they give the appropriate viscosity level when oil is at the "optimum" temp, any higher or lower temps would require different oils..

i think that makes sense :?
