Resonatorectomy - Advice and stories needed please!

Hi Guys,

Steve and I are getting custom tuned on Wednesday. His is
manual, mine is auto.

Prior to the tune, i am thinking about doing a resonatoectomy.
Can anyone offer advice about potential gains and how noisy
the car becomes after doing it?

I removed the resonator on my old WRX and was very happy
with the level of noise. Basically, if you were cruising there
was no difference in induction noise, but if you were 'hitting it'
on the twisites the induction noise was awesome. I'm hoping for
the same kind of result, so that daily driving noise doesn't
become a pain.

Has anyone removed the resonator here? Many thanks!

I'd say that at least 50% of the regular members have had it done.

I haven't bothered to do it but from what i know you will get a slightly more noticeable 'sucking' noise when you engage the throttle. Gains are next to nill.

I dont know about the 4s, but on the 6 you dont really notice it unless you give it pretty much everything! And when you do it sounds unreal! REALLLY deep. But in everyday driving, you dont really notice it at all.

I took it off a month or 2 ago on my 2.0 Turbo, no difference in power, but there is a nice induction noise, and some BOV sounds too which is nice.. it's not to loud though, just enough so you can nicely hear it

I have read that it causes a drop in performance due to the turbulence it causes in the intake air stream. It can be simply explained as intake noise = intake turbulence. It shouldn't cause a difference in flow rates so any performance increase is really a placebo (I don't know of anyone who has measured it with a manometer though).

The guys on LegacyGT did a really good writeup on this including some pretty knowledgeable guys who do this kind of stuff for a living.

Just thinking about it a bit more now... i didn't really notice that much of a difference until i added a HKS panel filter to it...

No difference that I noticed performance wise on my H6. Always a chance taking it off will be detrimental unless you plumb it up to a proper positive-pressure CAI

tek's comment above for one. Until somebody takes a manometer/magnehelic to the intake system (wish I would get around to it sometime), no one will know for sure. The resonator is probably really only there to help the car pass noise regulations but could also affect low-mid range (due to reduced intake tract volume). It would only be very small percentage points though so don't be worried about losing performance if you are after a bit of extra induction noise. Mine only went back on because it drowned out the zorst at the top end

The resonator is designed to affect the effective intake tract length. Removing it (or changing it for better or worse) will affect the length, which will, as pointed out above, create turbulence which is shown as noise.

He has tried the resonatorectamy on his Lib and found little to no difference in terms of
performance or intake noise. I am 'chasing the dragon' in terms of the benefits that were
had in my WRX Stevo. . . . i might pass as well.
