dump pipe bolts

Postby sundayDriver » Sun Sep 13, 2009 7:55 pm

This is a call out to anyone who got a phat dump pipe and fitted it themselves.

I had mine swapped in at a workshop and although they gave me the factory dump pipe, they didn't give me all the extra bits that fitted to the extra mounting points on the factory pipe.

I want to swap the factory pipe back in, so I need all the extra bits and pieces.

Does anybody out there have all the extra bolts/nuts and what I need to install the factory dump pipe back and make it look clean?

I'm assuming it amounts to about 2 or 3 kg of metal that could be posted to canberra. I'd be happy to pay for postage and send it back when I'm done.

I think the nuts and bolts your referring to a the small screws used to secure the heat shield, if your install was done correctly they should have trimmed the oem heat shields to fit. This is the shield that fits over the turbo.

The studs (bolts) used to mount to the dump pipe to the rear housing of the turbo a fixed to the turbo, so you shouldn’t need any extra nuts or bolts.

Thanks Tony. I'll get under the car and check it out.

From what I remember of Phat's dump pipe and looking at the factory one, I get the impression that the factory one has more bits of metal coming off it that seem to be support points (or to screw on other things).

You mean the heat shields?

The oem one has heat shields which cover most of the dump pipe, Phat's one is ceramic coated, no need for oem heat shields.

Here are a couple of shots of the factory dump pipe. I've circled in red the bits on the factory pipe which look like mounting/support points (which I don't think are on phat's pipe).

Thanks. Hopefully the rain holds off for the weekend so I can get under the car.

The heat shield attaches to those points in the first photo, in the bottom one there is a bracket attached to the transmission that the bracket fits to, Phat's has one that matches up to it. When the Phat one goes in (as stated previously), you need to cut the heat shield and those bits are no longer used. From memory there are like 9 or 10 bolts to get the heat shield off the stock dump, and when you cut it back you only need 5. Phat's is ceramic coated, but he recommends putting it back on to protect the steering knuckle... its all over here:

If I'm interpreting your question correctly, I think all you need is an un-modified heat shield, and all those points will line up the stock heat shield with the stock dump.

edit: there should also be a small bracket for the top of the heat shield that is attached to two of the five bolts used to bolt the dump to the turbo, if whoever installed it hasn't put it back, you will also need that.
