So where does it pull the air from? Looks to me like the filter is housed down where the airbox resonator usually lives. Do you then pipe air from the front bumper (take out the foglight?) or are you sucking from the wheel well?

Inside the guard, they are far from a perfect seal although I have heard of a car with an aftermarket turbo sucking the plastic guard liner through the AFM.
