Turbo upgrade questions

Postby Newbie GT » Sat Jun 01, 2013 7:03 pm

1. If replacing with an updated turbo replacing stock are new gaskets and nuts and bolts required?

2. A tune is need as its essential ? Do you really require the silicone inlet pipes to make the numbers?

Thanks guys

Think about how much work a turbo upgrade is.. You're concerned about the gaskets and nuts & bolts? Yes a tune is needed and if you are going to spend thousands on a new turbo, dump pipe, intercooler, injectors etc why wouldn't you install a silicone inlet pipe?

Reduce restriction. More flow.

Hi Newbie GT,

I didn't see what was previously posted, but in response to your questions...

1.) if upgrading the turbo you will need a better dump pipe and better top mount at minimum, the standard dump pipe is restrictive, even on the standard turbo. This should come with the gasket you need.

2.) A tune is definitely needed as you will be able to maximise the potential of the new turbo. You can still make very good numbers with a nice pod filter or K&N panel filter. So basically it all depends on what numbers you're looking for.

I highly recommend reading this link: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.p ... 78684.html this should give you a good insight into what mods to do for the power you need.

To follow up on this, dump pipe definitely recommended. I'd argue whether a new TMIC is needed as much (though I would do it myself).

The reason for these is simple. Your new upgraded turbo can "breathe" more air in and out than your old one, and the last thing you want to do (if you want to get the most from it) is to restrict the turbo's ability to breathe. The stock dump pipe is definitely restrictive even with the stock turbo, so a bigger/better turbo will just struggle to pass sufficient exhaust gases into it, and you'll slow it down and potentially even lose boost. The TMIC isn't such a big restriction (and I'm aware of people getting good numbers with the stock TMIC), but again, a less restrictive design will let the new turbo do its best work.

The stock pipework is corrogated, and known to impede flow. You could get by without replacing it, but if you're paying a good few thousand dollars (all up, by the time you change turbo, dump, intercooler, exhaust), why not spend the extra $200 or so on good silicone pipework and know that things will work properly)?

A tune is definitely required to see the benefits of the upgraded turbo. The stock tune is designed to work with the parameter of the stock turbo - your new upgraded turbo will be quite different.
