6MT gear noise

Postby jp928 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 3:28 pm

How much noise should I expect to hear in 1st and 2nd in this box? 3rd and up are fine, but 1st actaully sounds a little like a layshaft bearing, and 2nd is just a whine...
thanks,

Haven't noticed much noise from the box. This is my second 6MT, the '04 STi was also reasonably quiet.

Mine is pretty noisy, at first I was concerned but my S15's 6 speed was also noisy (can't remember if it was this noisy though). Seems to be worse when cold. I was going to upgrade the oil (which made a huge difference in my S15) but I'll wait for my 12.5k service and ask them to check it first.

If you're concerned JP, get them to check it I guess. Better to now, that down the track have issues.

I'm quite used to it now.. don't forget I came out of an auto Merc :) It's just a bit of a shock at first.. ;-) you think you've done the thrust bearing or something..

Whereabouts are you in Melbourne? You're welcome to have a drive of mine to compare.
(One small problem though, it's going to the panel beater tomorrow morning for a few days, I copped some pieve of metal hard into my driver door a week ago, and the whole door has to be repainted :(. )

My other cars a Supra... Compared to it, it's quite. To me, gearbox noise is normal.
