has anyone tried Shell Rotella T Syn in their 2.5T?

Postby PAZ04U » Tue Jan 04, 2011 8:17 pm

hey guys,

just coming up to my first service and i've been doing some research...

it looks like the best oil for the subies 2.5T is the shell rotella T synthetic diesel engine oil 5W-40...??? has anyone tried this?

also is it ok to use diesel oil in a petrol engine?

would love to hear your opinions on this..

Thanks Guys,

Alex...

I use extra virgin………

Seriously….. If your car is a diesel then go for it, but the last time I checked the GT didn't come in a diesel variation.

I have used royal purple 10/40 since day one…….. Can't complain after a few tracks and spirited driving, I have had very minimal burn off.
Not a soobi anymore, but still slightly dirty

Well the only reason why I asked is I read up on it and the guys in the us reckon it's the best oil for Subaru turbos... It's probably cheaper than the royal purple and its better for the engine.. I spoke to my mechanic and he reckons there will be no problem running diesel oil in my car.. He said it's probably better as it keeps the engine cleaner..

I'm gonna give it a go and see how it goes but if anyone else has tried it please let me know..

Thanks, Alex..

Alex.
Shell Rotella, being a diesel oil, will definitely contain more detergents.
If it meets Subaru standards and you and your mechanic are happy, then go for it.
I know of another forum member that was trialling Amsoil 5W40 synthetic diesel oil.
Haven't caught up with him about it but all seemed to be good last time I spoke to him.

Cheers,
Rusty.

I run Mobil Delvac 5w40 Heavy truck/turbo in 2 of my cars (MX5, Porsche 928), based on info from a truck operator who ran it in his Porsches and trucks (million km engines). Mate with an MX5 with cold start tappet noise changed to this and all his noises went away.
Its the viscosity you should get right first, before you worry about Synth/dino oil type. I am sticking with dealer service oil until I am out of warrany (2 years to run). If you have flat tappets, you need high levels of ZDDP(>1000ppm), and this stuff is out of favour lately due to catalyst problems etc. Not sure which, if any, Subie engines run flat tappets vs rockers, maybe somebody can enlighten us?

UPDATE - Jan 28. Just went through my service bills looking at oils used....
Delivered 3/3/08
may 08 10w30 Min - first change at 4700kms, check for bad engine build.
Sep 08 05W30 Synth - listed as Castrol LL01 Softec
Mar09 05W30 - LL01
Sep09 10W30 Magnatec
Mar10 05W30
Sep10 05W30

The Magnatec 10W30 in Sep 09 seems to be an anomaly...I seem to recall the owners manual lists 10W40?
