You'll need someone to read the error code first. Take your car to someone who has a Subaru Select Monitor, some independent mechanics have them. It won't cost you $900 straight up but it will at least cost an hour for the initial consult, to point you in the right direction.

Ring back Subaru and ask them what is the $900 for and what is the problem behind the engine light. See what they say but once you got it checked from Subaru you should of ask them the specific problem.

So if I was you, get on the phone right now and call the guys and let us know.

I'd hazard a guess and say its O2 sensor and that you are paying full dealer prices for parts and Labour, however the only way to be sure is to ask the Subaru Dealer for a detailed list of the work they propose to do.

My money is on the Air Fuel Ratio sensor, bank 1 sensor 1. Very common problem on our model. How is your idle... a little rough?

As the others said you're best to get Subaru to check the codes and tell you exactly what needs replacing - but if Subaru has given you a price already i assume you have done this.

Subaru dealers can be different on price, so get the part number you need and the work required to install and call other service dealers to get a quote. If it is the A/F Ratio sensor, i've heard different reports of it costing between $500 and $650, but not as high as $900. FYI the part alone is $475.

Good luck with the fix.

I think the irony is that his profile information like name, location, and car are all in lower case, while his post is all in caps. :D
