STI 2L bottom end into 2003 B4/GT ?

Postby parso_rex » Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:59 pm

Hi guys,
The guys at the workshop have a 10/2003 Lib GT wagon with auto tranny which has died. It does say B4 on the compliance plate (so I'm a bit confused :) ) same later model 04,05,06 etc shape however. Does anyone know if the WRX STI bottom end can be bolted in without any issues or is there some bizzare difference in the castings or some crap :)

The reason I ask is the 2L STI blocks can be bought new for $2400 from Subaru complete with proper forged piston Vs the $3K plus for the LGT 2L bottom end. Its some sort of special I believe. trying to save the owner some dollars

Cheers

Mark

All I can add is the engine code for LGT's is EJ20X or EJ20Y. Im guessing you want to use the EJ207 block? I dont know the differences, have spent many hours searching the net with no avail. Sorry I can't add more.

Most 2L and 2.5L bottoms ends will be interchangeable. My old man recently put a 2.5L bottom end (bought from Subaru this year) into a v5 Sti WRX, so we kept the v5 heads and everything. Exhaust/intakes,tranny all fitted up no probs.

I was thinking of putting that 2.0L bottom end into my Liberty as it has forged pistons etc, but i couldn't be bothered really as its a daily driver.

I know this is an old thread but...

I have a big end bearing problem on my MY04 GT Premium (Auto)..
Finally biting the bullet and getting a new 2.0L STI short block..

There was a note on the quote that read;

"Please note; it may not be possible to use the STi piston on the Liberty GT due to tolerance variants. This can only be determined when assembling your new engine"

Apparently due to the AVCS there might be a problem, but won't know till they try? Has anybody done one of these swaps or has experience that can shed some more light?

Thanks in advance

John

Just an update on this..

The STI 2L short block matched up perfectly with no hassles as advised by a few forum members..

Very happy with the work, car runs like a dream.. and most importantly no more big end knocking.
Pockets are empty now tho!

A bit of a thread bump.

Of those people that have put a STI 2.0 block into an 04 Liberty GT.
What head gaskets did you use?
STI or Liberty?
Thickness?
I'm needing to order gaskets/gasket kit. If you have any part numbers that would be great.

TIA

Use OEM 2.0L gaskets for the Lib. Chat to Kris at Rising Sun Subaru about getting them

(Haven't done the conversion but I've looked into it in a fair bit of detail...)

Depends which Sti 2 litre block you used

Version 7 had forged pistons so are easily discernible

Version 8 and 9 had hyperteutetic pistons with the same block as version 7

Version 10 revision A same as version 8 and 9

Version 10 revision B had thicker walls

If version 7-9 or version 10 revision A, then you can use stock liberty 2.0 l ej20y/x headgaskets

If v10 revision B, then you need specific gaskets from Japan as the water jackets on these don't line up with liberty gaskets

Thanks dr20t

The block is from a ADM 03 STI ?

Any recommendations on getting the correct gasket kit cheaply from local or OS.
Aussie prices are crazy

If someone has a part number, that would be appreciated

V7 forged piston short block

Use your liberty headgaskets. Sorry can't help with part number now but japanparts should have it listed
