Newbie Question -> Why are thermo fans not put on the bottom of the top mount intercoolers? Is the realestate not sufficient to allow a thermo fan? Has anyone tried this? I see it on many race cars but never looked on a subie before.

Japan Parts offer a unit from Marche but its not cheap to buy.

Although I'm sure it would do something, I think it's a bit of a waste of time.

Race cars would have those sort of things because they are so highly strung & therefore will generate a lot more heat... Obviously our road cars would not.

You'd need to be putting out so much power that the power drain on the fan is less than the cooling benefits of the thermos...

Used to think the same before calculating it but even if you had a thirsty 10A fan running (unlikely to drag that much given the size of the cooler core) - it equates to 120w at 12v (or 140w at running voltage)

So about the same as driving with your lights on ( 2 x 5w tails, 2 x 5w parkers 2 x 60w highbeams) in drag on the alternator. Ok add a few more watts for inefficiency and still - no real noticable difference.

I just thought if you could do it relatively cheaply (i.e. not $600) it might be a really good way to keep the top mount cool especially to help combat the heat soak when stationary etc...

BOXER - are you happy with the tune Paul did? I am, raised my power from a poor 125kw at the wheels to 175kw atw. Car has also stopped knocking so I'm sure it will last a little longer now.
