Hi All,

I just had a service done and was told that I was due for timing belt. The car has just done 55,000km's so Im interested to know when you might have had to do this and the cost.

the timing belt is normally done at the 100k service or 48 months mine cost $1200 from local mechanic

had my one changed at 60000 and 8yrs old. also changed water pump, cam seals, and timing belt tensioner. i supplied all parts labout was $300

I bought my Liberty at 47KKms and the owner had not had it done yet despite the car 5 years old. I just got it done in case as the book says 4 years or 100KKms. $150 for the belt + 3 hours labor.

Having worked for Holden I saw many many timing belts on their Opel products that snapped belts at low Kms due to time elapsed past their recommended schedules, so I wasn't taking any chances. Snapped belt = top end rebuild.

probably not - you've got in the region of 10mm piston to chamber top clearance at TDC. Doubt the valves are "lifted" that far

Smythie is that a guess or are you 100% sure? I checked prior to getting the work done and the EJ25 is an interference design engine, presume the EJ20T are too. Most modern engines are designed like this to be compact and have high CRs. This means if the belt snaps there is a very high risk of valves damage when they hit the pistons.

working off a stroke of 79mm and a static compression ratio of 8.4:1 (both figures sourced from Subaru spec sheets) and assuming a plain cylindrical combustion chamber (flat piston top and flat chamber top) I calculate a 10.67mm squish height. I've read these engines described as free revving in here before, which is what prompted me to does those calcs.

- edit - opps, sorry, I forgot to mention that was for the 2.5GT. Your 2.5i with its 10:1 CR will have an 8.7mm squish height using the above assumptions and a 2.0GT 8.8mm (assuming the stroke was the same as the 2 litre Impreza)

I had mine replaced at 5 years / 60,000km. Like the OP, my car was being serviced and they recommended it be replaced.

Thanks for the input guys, Im going to do it just checking that the service department was honest. Do any of you know of a good place to get it done around the Parramatta area. Willing to travel as far as Liverpool.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the input, I did get the belt replaced and had the major service done at a cost of $1200. Some of you might be interested to know that 2 of my pulleys hand done a ball bearing and the belt had hair line tears on the either side of it. Aslo compared to the new belt it had gone very hard and the teath on the belt were rounded rather than sharp. So i guess either 4years or 100,000km's i would get it done.

Sorry to revive a very old thread but rather than start a new one for a simple question, can anyone confirm the part number for the timing belt kit to suit a MY06 GT, i have gone to Auto pro who have quoted me number KTBA161H, but this is for the EJ20 X i think. I have searched around but there is no simple answer, there is four listings for the same car!

P.S my car is Auto
