So who else has heard this noise when driving of for the first time? When I say driving for the first time, every time after car has been turned off.....

It sounds like an actuator to me.... Does anyone know what it isor does?

I’m sure we all have it, as I had a 300ZXTT and that had the same noise but only when I reversed out the drive for the first time...... :o

does it happen for something like seconds as soon as you turn the ignition ON (not accessories)? If that is the case, it's probably the fuel pump priming the system

Is it like a momentary grinding noise? I think I have it too on a cold morning. About 20m from when you first move?

That’s the noise......I wouldn’t say grinding......or only when it’s cold.....but it’s as you take of about 20m from moving.......

Have a closer listen next time you drive of..............

It sounds like it’s meant to do it, but i would like to know what it is........

Sounds like the ABS module. The ABS module performs a self test every time the car is started & driven off. I hear it in the morning while I'm creeping out of the driveway onto the street when the radio is low or off.

Its a noisy self test (If thats what it is).......It sounds like its from the mid to rear of the car......Are we sure thats what it is?

If the sound is coming from mid to rear then you can rule out the ABS module self test as the ABS module is located in the engine bay, the ABS self test is noisy.

The fuel pump is located under the rear passenger seat and as smythie suggested it may be the fuel pump priming which is noisy too.

If your concerned, swing by a subaru service center and get them to have a listen, if its either of the two, they will be able to tell you on the spot as they produce different noise.

A sort of a soft clunk from forward in the car?

I heard it from the front of the car...

I wouldn’t think it’s the fuel pump priming as its well after the car has been started.

I’m not worried about it; i would just like to know what it does.

My ZX had it and I’m sure i asked the experts back then what it was but f*$ked if i can remember.

Let’s see if we can get an answer here......

Just cured this problem in my 2004 Liberty now silent again. Yes, the ABS is self checking.
Jerome Wong, customer relations at Subaru indicated that the pump itself is vibration dampened by a small grommet beneath the pump. I packed the pump to reduce vibration and the noise reduced somewhat.
However, I found that the real problem wasn't the actual ABS pump, but the close procimity of the brake lines to the body of the car. Vibration from the ABS pump, located under the bonnet directly infromt of the driver (with lots of pipes coming from it), is travelling down the brake lines (logically). If you look closely at the brake lines going aft from the pump, they follow the "chassis" line VERY closely. I padded the brake line closest to the body of the car with a bit of old rubber tubing.
Simple 10 second fix for the noise problem.

my Gen2 legacy used to do it.
you could feel it actually activating the ABS through the pedal.
