Auto v Manual

Postby RXWAG » Fri Nov 21, 2008 12:23 pm

I've seen an automatic GT wagon for sale, and am interested to know if anyone has driven both a manual and an automatic?

What's the general feel towards the auto? Manual better?

If your looking for out & out performace, the manual is the better option as it comes with a larger turbo out of the box. In saying that, the auto isn't a slow poke either.

At the end of the day it comes down to the type of driving you do most.

Personally, I love driving manual because of the control, but as I sit in peak hour traffic pretty much everyday, the auto is fantastic. Plus it still has the manual mode when you want a little more control &/or your out for fun :D

what matt said.....and i think 07 onwards both manual and auto have the same size turbos......

auto also helps with towing and being stuck in traffic......

btw we both drive auto.......ironic??

Hmmmmm...

The one i was looking at is a 2004 model. It would just be my everyday car, a cruiser if you will.

I need to have a drive of one to get a feel for it. I've always driven a manual as it feels like it gives you that bit more control.

Don't listen to them swingn my new wagon will be used to cart my surfboards around and ferry my mates (when it's my turn) surfing!

So it's a surfie wagon, which sounds better then mummy's car!

:P

My Lancer was manual... My SP23 was manual... My BMW E36 M3 was manual & I get to drive my Dad's MANUAL 911 C4S from time to time... I think I've got it sorted by now... :P

But I'm probably a little rusty... :P

Don't get me wrong, had I had the choice, I'd have a manual Lib in a heart beat. I can put up with a manual in traffic. Sadly didn't get that choice because of the Mrs, so I have a quick auto :D

Better stop whoring... I mean, high jacking this post :P

Mr RXWAG, I don't think you can go wrong with auto or manual :D Either way, your getting a good car :D

That was the same dilemma for me, so i took an auto for a drive first & wasn't to fussed so i took a manual for a drive & there was just no comparison at all, & I just hated the auto in comparison.
The manual is such a much better car to drive & the control over when you want to change gears is when YOU want it to not when the car decides it wants to.
I found the auto even in manual mode would still have a delay in changing & sometimes wouldn't change down until i slowed down enough.
But in saying that if my normal route to work involved sitting in a lot of traffic I would probably then & only then have an auto.

To sum it all up take both for a drive, & I reckon you will agree :D , don't be fooled into thinking that an auto in manual mode is as good as a manual,
ITS NOT!! ITS STILL AN AUTO & ALWAYS WILL BE

You are 100% correct sir!

Unless you got a DSG style gear box, an auto is never going to give you as much control as you can get in a manual.

Just comes down to personal choice. Everyone has their reasons for going with one or the other. Each is smooth and slick for it's category.

But yeah, really go for a test drive in both forms. See which one will suite your current needs better.

I've driven DSG-equipped cars that do exactly the same thing. Put a DSG-equipped Golf GTi or R32 into a high gear and floor it and it will still kick down. Likewise it will still refuse to shift down at anything above 3000rpm or thereabouts.

I love the 5-speed manual but they need to be semi-thrashed to get off the line quickly. I'd prefer our Lib to be a manual but it's the wife's car first and foremost.

I didn't realise the manuals had a different turbo to the autos. What turbo did the manual get (I think the auto got a VF38)? I guess you learn something new every day so if someone could enlighten me.

Cheers,
Ben

Now now mummy....WHO'S YOUR DADDY!?

On a serious note, auto's are fun too, but like so many have already stated, that control ain't there.

Coming from auto GT into a manual, I gotta say, if I had a choice, I'd pick the manual box.

From memory... you will get the "DAMN, I wish I had a manual" moment.
